Australian Open 🇦🇺 R1 Preview
🇦🇺 Samantha Stosur vs 🇵🇷 Monica Puig
Samantha Stosur begins yet another Australian Open campaign on Monday when she comes up against Monica Puig. Stosur’s struggles at her home Grand Slam event have been well documented over the years, Stosur has not reached the second week of the event since 2010. At 33, Stosur will know she will not have many more chances in Melbourne, the Aussie would love nothing more than to go on a deep run at Melbourne Park. Stosur will have her work cut out to avoid a third consecutive opening round loss in Melbourne when she takes on Monica Puig in the opening round.
Stosur has had a decent preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year. Stosur was again beaten in the opening round at the Brisbane International, beaten by Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets. Stosur then went on to play in Sydney where she came from a set down to claim an impressive win over Carina Witthoeft. The second was where Stosur’s ran came to an end, beaten by Daria Gavrilova in straight sets. Stosur had a good summer of training and after a few matches against quality opposition she will feel ready to go in Melbourne.
Monica Puig had a disappointing 2017 and is continuing to underachieve. Puig was unable to gain much needed momentum in the weeks prior to the first Grand Slam of the year. Puig was beaten by Julia Goerges in the opening round in Auckland, a tough draw but Puig did push Goerges to a third set, the only player to achieve that in Auckland as Goerges won the title. In Sydney Puig stumbled at the final stage of qualifying.
Stosur holds a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over Puig. However it was Puig who won their most recent match, a 6-4 6-4 victory in Sydney in 2016.
