Antwerp QF: Andrea Petkovic vs Dominika Cibulkova
Friday’s fourth and final quarter-final from the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games sees two fierce competitors collide when Andrea Petkovic takes on Dominika Cibulkova. Andrea Petkovic’s remarkable week continued on Wednesday evening, saving eight match points to defeat Alison Van Uytvanck to set up a quarter-final clash with Domi.
After two marathon victories in Germany’s Fed Cup triumph over Australia, Andrea was once again forced to battle extremely hard for her opening round victory in Antwerp. After receiving a bye through to the second round, Andrea fought past local hopeful, Alison Van Uytvanck 6-7 7-6 6-2 in a match that lasted well over three hours.
Serving to stay in the match at 5-6 in the second set, Andrea Petkovic would incredibly save eight match points. It would have been very easy for Andrea to give up after a tough couple of matches in the Fed Cup and some dubious decisions going against her. However Andrea once again showed that she is one of the biggest fighters on tour, rebounding with a comfortable third set triumph.
Domi’s pathway to the quarter-finals has been far more straightforward. The Slovakian opened her Antwerp campaign with a comprehensive 6-1 6-2 victory over Kateryna Bondarenko before defeating Indy de Vroome 6-3 3-6 6-2. Domi’s form fluctuated throughout her second round victory, however she was able to play some of her best tennis when it really mattered to set up an exciting quarter-final encounter with Andrea Petkovic.
Petkovic has a 2-1 head to head record over Domi, Andrea won both of their 2014 encounters, both in straight sets. Their latest match was in Sofia late last year, a 7-5 6-3 victory.
It would take an almighty effort for Andrea to back up after three tough victories this week, although she has had an extra day of rest to refresh herself for this tough match. I have to favour Domi in this match, she will surely be the fresher of the two. If she plays her best, she has the ability outhit Andrea.
Prediction: Domi Cibulkova to defeat Andrea Petkovic in 2 sets
