(9) πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± Agnieszka Radwanska vs (Q) πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ Alison Van Uytvanck

Agnieszka Radwanska made a positive return to court as she breezed through her opening round clash at Roland Garros. Radwanska dropped just two games against local French wild card Fiona Ferro in her first match since Stuttgart as she moved into the second round at Roland Garros. The world number 8 has never been at her best on clay and as such Roland Garros has easily been her least successful Grand Slam, Aga will look to change that in 2017 in what is a very open field, Radwanska will face Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round on Thursday, a potentially dangerous match-up on the red dirt.

Radwanska has had a poor season by her usual standards, it is unclear whether her best is beyond her. The next few months seem critical for the Pole, there is an opportunity for Radwanska given the openness of the tour at the moment. Radwanska has not won back-to-back matches since Sydney, a very rare statistic for Aga who is usually one of the most consistent players on tour. Aga will look to amend that trend on Thursday when she comes up against Alison Van Uytvanck in Paris.

Alison Van Uytvanck is having a good week, Van Uytvanck came through the qualifying draw in Paris, winning all three matches in straight sets. Van Uytvanck continued that trend in the main draw as she came past Naomi Osaka 6-3 7-5. Paris is a special place for Van Uytvanck given her surprising run to the quarter-finals at the event in 2015, easily the best result of her career. Van Uytvanck will be confident she can cause an upset against the ninth seeded Pole.

Radwanska thrashed Van Uytvanck in their only previous encounter, a 6-2 6-1 win on clay in Brussels in 2012. Much has changed since their last meeting, Radwanska is playing with much less confidence and Van Uytvanck continues to improve and is more comfortable on a clay court.

I’m going to give Radwanska the benefit of the doubt here. Van Uytvanck is the type of opponent that Radwanska usually plays well against, however the surface will suit Van Uytvanck is this match-up. I suspect Radwanska will have too much variation and smarts for Van Uytvanck, Radwanska knows how to make players like Van Uytvanck uncomfortable, she should still be able to do this enough to scape by despite the clay court surface.

Prediction: (9) Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat (Q) Alison Van Uytvanck in 2 sets
