Agnieszka Radwanska and Belinda Bencic will go head to head for the first time in what promises to be a magical final on Saturday at Devonshire Park. There is an interesting undertone to this matchup, Belinda is mentored by Martina Hingis, a player Aga has been likened to throughout her career. Both ladies play with an abundance of variety which should lead to an entertaining final.
Aga Radwanska has revitalized her 2015 season this week in Eastbourne. The Pole’s run to final has been her most encouraging performance of the year. Aga stormed through her opening through matches, picking up impressive straight set victories over Karolina Pliskova and Tsvetana Pironkova.
Radwanska progressed through to her first final of 2015 with a hardfought 6-1 6-7 6-2 victory over Sloane Stephens on Friday. Aga was at her counter-punching best in the opening set and found herself in a winning position in the second. However Aga failed to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second and succumbed in the tiebreaker. Aga recovered well in the third set, her consistency was ultimately too much for Sloane to handle.
Belinda Bencic reached her first premier level final courtesy of Caroline Wozniacki pulling out of their semi-final with an unknown injury concern. The second time a player has been forced to retire during a match against Belinda this week, Eugenie Bouchard retired during the second set of their third round clash with an abdominal injury.
Belinda Bencic has once again shown her capabilities on grass over the past couple of weeks, reaching the final at s-Hertogenbosch and now reaching the final in Eastbourne. However, The 18-year-olds biggest test will come on Saturday when she comes up against a determined Agnieszka Radwanska.
It will be fascinating to see how this match plays out, In the first career meeting between two former junior Wimbledon champions. We can expect to see long, entertaining rallies between two ladies with endless variety.
Aga has expressed that she is desperate to win this tournament, keen to win the same tournament twice for the first time in her career. The 2008 champion has played beautiful tennis this week, serving very well whilst being at her counter-punching best from the baseline. She enters this match as the strong favourite, however Bencic will be no easy beat.
This is the biggest match of Belinda’s life, her ability to deal with the occasion will play a big part in the result. At the same time, Belinda has nothing to lose, therefore a number of outcomes are possible.
