(5) Agnieszka Radwanska vs Caroline Garcia
After receiving a bye into the second round, fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska will begin her Wuhan campaign on Tuesday when she takes on Caroline Garcia.
Agnieszka Radwanska arrives in Wuhan on the back of a disappointing loss to Varvara Lepchenko in the quarter-finals in Seoul. The Pole will fall outside the top 5 for the first time since February 2012 unless Li Na is removed from the WTA rankings list. Aga has had some great results during the Asian swing in the past and will be desperate for some successful tournaments to end what has been a rather disappointing season.
Caroline Garcia advanced to the second round with a thrilling 6-4 4-6 7-6 victory over Venus Williams. Garcia trailed 2-5 in the third set but was able to turn things around by remaining aggressive. Garcia played particularly well in the third set tiebreaker, condemning Venus Williams to yet another third set tiebreak defeat. Garcia’s victory over Venus broke a string of three consecutive loses, an important victory for the emerging Frenchwoman who has struggled to gain any momentum of late.
These two have met on one previous occasion, Radwanska prevailed in a tight battle 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open earlier this year. Radwanska is seemingly deprived of confidence at the moment and is certainly vulnerable. Garcia played some great aggressive tennis in her victory over Venus Williams on Sunday and will be a tricky first up opponent for the Pole. Nevertheless I expect Aga to rebound with a hard fought victory.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Caroline Garcia in 3 sets
