Karolina Pliskova vs Barbora Strycova, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇨🇿 (6) Karolina Pliskova vs 🇨🇿 (20) Barbora Strycova

I’m going to go for the upset here. I think Strycova has the type of awkward game that can throw Pliskova off and potentially lose her rhythm, this is especially true on a past court, Strycova beat Pliskova on grass in 2016. Pliskova has a poor record against the top defensive players on tour, Pliskova has really struggled against crafty players such as Radwanska. Meaning Pliskova can struggle against Strycova. Strycova will be very motivated heading into this match after Pliskova stole her coach at the end of last year. On a quick hard court, I think Strycova will cause a big upset here.

Prediction: Barbora Strycova to defeat Karolina Pliskova in 3 sets

Angelique Kerber vs Su-Wei Hsieh, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇩🇪 (21) Angelique Kerber vs 🇹🇼 Su-Wei Hsieh

I’m going to side with Kerber. The German is playing outstanding tennis right now and is full of confidence. Kerber has a heap of wins under her belt, having already won 12 matches this year, this is when Kerber is at her best. Kerber is the only remaining Grand Slam champion left in the draw and I would consider her the favourite to win the title from here.

This will be the first career meeting Kerber and Hsieh. This should be a good match-up for Kerber. Hsieh is solid and crafty but does not have massive weapons which is a big problem against Kerber. I think Kerber will actually enjoy playing against Hsieh, Kerber likes playing against flat hitters and will not be bothered by drop shots or slice. Kerber can absorb all of Hsieh’s best shots whilst dominating with her heavier weapons. I think Kerber will win this comfortably.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Su-Wei Hsieh in 2 sets

Simona Halep vs Naomi Osaka, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇷🇴 (1) Simona Halep vs 🇯🇵 Naomi Osaka

This is a major danger match for Simona Halep. The world number 1 laboured through a dramatic match against Davis In the third round which lasted almost 4 hours. Halep is not playing her best tennis at Melbourne Park and is not at her best physically after rolling her ankle in her opening round win over Aiava. Conversely, Osaka has rolled through her opening 3 matches in Melbourne and has the type of dynamic, powerful game that can trouble the Romanian.

I’m going to stick with Halep here. Osaka clearly poses a real threat to Halep, Osaka’s powerful game can penetrate the defense of Halep. Nevertheless, I think Halep’s experience at this level and improved mental strength will see her come through another tight match against Osaka. In a sense, Halep now has little to lose having saved match points in her third round win, those are the types of wins that often lead to deep runs at an event. I still question Osaka’s ability under extreme pressure, on the big stage against one of best defensive players on tour, I think she will fall just short.

Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Naomi Osaka in 3 sets

Caroline Garcia vs Madison Keys, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇫🇷 (8) Caroline Garcia vs 🇺🇸 (17) Madison Keys

This is going to be an exciting match between two players with extreme potential, both are right on the verge of taking the next step an solidifying their spot in the top 10. Both Garcia and Keys have very attacking games, both love to dictate play and are at their best when on the front foot. It is Keys who has more firepower but it is Garcia who has a more versatile game. Both players will have similar plans heading into this match, both will want to get on the front foot and dictate play from up in the court.

I’m going to give the edge to Garcia here. I think Garcia is battle hardened heading into this match having already come through some very tough tests this week. Conversely, Keys has not really been challenged and therefore has not had to execute her game under pressure. I think Garcia has more to her game and therefore has the slight edge. If Madison’s attacking game is not firing, there is still not really a plan B. Conversely. Garcia doesn’t mind paying with more margin, the Frenchwoman has more shape on her ground strokes, has better movement around the court and is more capable at the net. In what should be a really close match, I think Garcia will emerge victorious.

Prediction: Caroline Garcia to defeat Madison Keys in 3 sets

Anett Kontaveit vs Carla Suarez Navarro, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇪🇪 (32) Anett Kontaveit vs 🇪🇸 Carla Suarez Navarro

I’m going to side with Suarez Navarro here. The Spaniard has more experience at this stage of big events and I suspect she will be smart enough and experienced enough to get past Kontaveit. Whilst Kontaveit has been impressive in Melbourne, she is extremely streaky and been inconsistent throughout all of her matches. Kontaveit’s opponents have not been good enough to take advantage in the opening few rounds, Suarez Navarro will not make the same mistake. The Spaniard’s consistency and defensive skills will trouble Kontaveit, under pressure I think Kontaveit will start to go for too much and see the Spaniard emerge victorious.

Prediction: Carla Suarez Navarro to defeat Anett Kontaveit in 3 sets

Caroline Wozniacki vs Magdalena Rybarikova, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇩🇰 (2) Caroline Wozniacki vs 🇸🇰 (19) Magdalena Rybarikova

I suspect Wozniacki will win this match fairly comfortably. This is a good match-up for Wozniacki. Rybarikova does not have any big weapons, this usually spells trouble against Wozniacki. The Dane will know the opportunity she has this week given how the draw has opened up for her and will be extremely focused heading into this match. Wozniacki will return most of Rybarikova’s best shots which will put pressure on the Slovakian to play outside her comfort zone. I don’t see Rybarikova having much success here.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Magdalena Rybarikova in 2 sets

Petra Martic vs Elise Mertens, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇭🇷 Petra Martic vs 🇧🇪 Elise Mertens

I have to give the edge to Mertens here. I think this should be a good match-up for Mertens. I would say Mertens has more too her game, Mertens certainly has more weapons that can hurt Martic. Both players are fairly good defenders, both move well around the court, both have good first serves and a decent second serve. The difference is that Mertens has a greater ability to hit through the court whilst at the same time I think Mertens is quicker and the better mover around the court. Mertens is in great form right now and should be too good for Martic.

Prediction: Elise Mertens to defeat Petra Martic in 2 sets

Elina Svitolina vs Denisa Allertova, Australian Open R4 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R4 Prediction
🇺🇦 (4) Elina Svitolina vs 🇨🇿 (Q) Denisa Allertova

Svitolina may enter this match over 100 places above Allertova in the rankings but that is not a true indication of the threat posed to the 4th seed by Allertova. The only previous match between the pair ended in a victory for Allertova, a straight set win on a hard court in Doha in 2016. Allertova is in superb form in Melbourne, having come through the qualifying draw, Allertova has won 6 matches, all in straight sets. Can Allertova’s big run continue with a big upset over the 4th seed?

I do think Allertova is a dangerous opponent for Svitolina, especially on a quick surface. However, I think Svitolina will find a way to come though this one. Physically, Svitolina will be in better shape heading into this match, Svitolina has played 3 relatively quick matches whilst Allertova has already played 6 matches this week which is uncharted territory for Allertova. Svitolina will force Allertova into a few extra shots compared to what she has come up against in Melbourne. I don’t believe Allertova will be able to consistently penetrate the defense of Svitolina whilst Svitolina will be able to step up and control points when she needs to.

Prediction: Elina Svitolina to defeat Denisa Allertova in 3 sets

Agnieszka Radwanska vs Su-Wei Hsieh, Australian Open R3 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R3 Prediction
🇵🇱 (26) Agnieszka Radwanska vs 🇹🇼 Su-Wei Hsieh

This should be a closer match than the gap in the rankings between the two suggests. Hsieh is playing some of the best tennis of her career right now, entering this third round clash on the back of the biggest win of her career over Garbine Muguruza, Hsieh’s first career win over a top 5 player. Conversely, Radwanska is not at her best right and scrapped through her first two matches in Melbourne from a set down against players she would usually expect to beat quite comfortably.

I’m going to side with Radwanska here but I think this will be a close match. Hsieh likes to play against flat hitters and Radwanska does not play with much shape. This is also a good match-up for Radwanska because she too likes to play against flat hitters and Hsieh is not the type of player that will hit Aga off the court. At this stage of the tournament, I think the experience of Radwanska will be a big factor. Radwanska is the more consistent player and is likely to outlast or out-smart Hsieh in the majority of rallies.

Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Su-Wei Hsieh in 3 sets

Angelique Kerber vs Maria Sharapova, Australian Open R3 Prediction

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R3 Prediction
🇩🇪 (21) Angelique Kerber vs 🇷🇺 Maria Sharapova

This is going to be fascinating contest. Kerber is in awesome form heading into this match. Kerber won all 4 of her singles matches at the Hopman Cup before winning the title at the Sydney International. The perfect preparation for the first Slam of the year. Kerber has carried that good form to Melbourne where she has won her first two matches of the event in straight sets. Sharapova also enters this match with confidence after producing one of her best performances since her return to the tour in her straight set victory over Anastasija Sevastova.

I’m going to give the edge to Kerber here. I think Kerber has a pretty clear edge. Kerber handled Sharapova in their two previous encounter in 2014 and 2015, at that stage it was Sharapova who was closer to her best and Kerber will won those matches. Right now, Kerber is certainly the better player. Sharapova is not the player she once was and I highly doubt she can produce a consistent enough performance to hit through Kerber. The German is back to her best and her current level she is a nightmare match-up for Sharapova because of her ability to defend, absorb and redirect the power of Sharapova. Expect Kerber to win this fairly comfortably.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Maria Sharapova in 2 sets
