Sydney International 🇦🇺🦈 Final Preview
🇦🇺 Ashleigh Barty vs 🇩🇪 Angelique Kerber
Saturday’s final at the Sydney International promises to be a tight encounter between Ashleigh Barty and Angelique Kerber. Barty ended 2017 as one of the form players on tour and is getting closer to rediscovering that form in Sydney. Kerber is the form player on tour right now having won her first 8 matches to start the season, the former would number 1 looks like the player that won 2 Grand Slam titles in 2016.
I’m going to side with Kerber here. Kerber is playing awesome tennis at the moment and heads into this final relaxed, determined and full of confidence. Kerber is no stranger to a big stage and will thrive under the spotlight. Conversely, Barty has only ever played in 2 WTA finals, this Sydney final in front of her home crowd will be one of the biggest matches of her career thus far. Barty has looked nervy at times this week and 3 of her 4 matches were not of a high quality, the Strycova match before being the exception.
I think Kerber will find the holes in the Barty game. Barty served very poorly in her semi-final win over Gavrilova and generally has not been serving anywhere near her best this week. Kerber has one of the best returns of serve on tour and unless Barty significantly improves her serving standard she will be in big trouble. Kerber will win the majority of baseline rallies and a large majority of extended rallies. The way Kerber is playing right now, she is perhaps the best player in the world, it looks like she will be too good for Barty here.
