Belinda Bencic vs (wc) Johanna Konta
A surprise quarter-final at Devonshire Park sees Belinda Bencic take on home crowd favourite, Johanna Konta. This is a remarkable opportunity for both ladies to reach the semifinals of a premier event.
A Former junior Wimbledon champion, Belinda Bencic is building momentum heading into the Championships. Belinda’s game is very effective on grass, her flat groundstrokes and variety from the baseline make a very dangerous opponent.
Bencic reached the final in s-Hertogenbosch and now finds herself in the quarter-finals in Eastbourne. Bencic is yet to drop a set this week, battling past Mona Barthel and Madison Keys in style. The 18-year-old reached the final eight courtesy of a 6-4 3-0 victory an out of sorts Eugenie Bouchard. Bencic won a tight opening set before winning the first 12 points of the second set, Bouchard ended up retiring due to abdominal soreness.
Johanna has certainly made the most of her wild card this week in Eastbourne. The Brit has caused three upsets in a row, defeating Zarina Diyas, Ekaterina Makarova and Garbine Muguruza. Konta’s victory over Makarova in the second round was her most impressive of the week, stunning the former champion in a commanding 6-2 6-4 victory.
Konta backed up her upset over Makarova with an impressive 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over Garbine Muguruza. Konta matched Muguruza from the baseline, almost matching the Spaniard winners count.
This will be the third career meeting between the pair. The head to head record is currently split at one win apiece. It was Konta who won their most recent encounter, an emphatic 6-3 6-2 victory in the second round at Eastbourne last year. Johanna will therefore be full of confidence heading into this match, she knows she has the game to trouble Belinda on this surface and she will have the full support of the crowd.
Nevertheless, It’s hard to pick against Bencic here. Bencic has been quite solid all year and seems to be recapturing her impressive early season form. The youngster will be too solid here.
