(8) Caroline Wozniacki vs (1) Serena Williams
Caroline Wozniacki enters the semi-finals in Singapore as the only woman to go through the group stage undefeated. The Dane will face her biggest challenge of the tournament thus far on Saturday when she faces two time defending champion Serena Williams in what promises to be a fascinating first semi-final. Courtesy of Agnieszka Radwanska taking a set of Maria Sharapova on Friday, Serena Williams secured the season ending world number 1 ranking.
Caroline Wozniacki has played some of the best tennis of her career this week in Singapore. Wozniacki upset Maria Sharapova in an epic three set encounter to begin her campaign before edging past Agnieszka Radwanska in an extremely close two setter. Yesterday, Caroline proved too solid for an erratic Petra Kvitova. Credit has to go to Wozniacki, the Dane played one the best matches of her season to comfortably defeat Petra and send good friend Aga through to the semi-finals.
Serena Williams' pathway to the semi-finals has not been so pleasant. The world number 1 started her title defence in a positive manner, defeating Ana Ivanovic in a fiery straight sets match. Serena then produced one of her worst performances in a long time, the world number 1 was totally outplayed by Simona Halep in a humiliating 0-6 2-6 loss. Serena rebounded against a hapless Eugenie Boucahrd in her third match, storming to a 6-1 6-1 victory. Serena will too face her toughest opponent of the week on Saturday when she comes up against a player who is the best form of her life.
Serena has a commanding 8-1 head-to-head advantage over her good friend Caroline Wozniacki. The two have already met on three previous occasions this season, with Serena emerging victorious on each occasion. However their first two matches were extremely close, with Wozniacki finding herself in a match winning position on both occasions. In Montreal and in Cincinnati, Serena was forced to come from a set down, before eventually prevailing a tight third set. Despite Serena’s dominant head-to-head record, Caroline Wozniacki has reason to be optimistic heading into this match.
Caroline Wozniacki enters this match in the form of her life, whilst Serena is quite some distance from her best and is certainly not fully fit. Of course, Serena can no doubt get the job done whilst not being at her best. However I think Caroline is primed for this match and has much more to play for. Wozniacki is not the type of player Serena wants to be playing at this time of the year, especially on the slow courts in Singapore. I believe Caroline will eventually ware Serena down and win in three sets
Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Serena Williams in 3 sets
