Ajla Tomljanovic vs. Alize Cornet, Indian Wells R1 Preview

🇺🇸🌵 BNPPO19, Indian Wells – R1 Preview
🇦🇺 Ajla Tomljanovic vs. 🇫🇷 Alize Cornet

An interesting opening round match-up at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open features Ajla Tomljanovic and Alize Cornet. Tomljanovic and Cornet have both had their moments in 2019 but both have struggled with consistency. This is an interesting match-up, seemingly a very even one, who will step it up and emerge victorious?

Ajla Tomljanovic continues to climb up the rankings having recently cracked back into the top 50. Tomljanovic’s run to the final in Hua Hin last month was a big step forward for the Aussie though it was ultimately a disappointing result given she squandered a big lead in the final to Dayana Yastremska. Tomljanovic seemingly struggled to rebound from that loss in Hua Hin during the Middle Eastern swing as she suffered opening round losses in Doha and Dubai.

Alize Cornet has been in decent form of late. Cornet’s recent highlight came during France’s triumphant Fed Cup tie against Belgium where Cornet upset Elise Mertens in a crucial result for the French team. Since then Cornet went on to play in Dubai where she suffered a second round loss at the hands of Alison Riske.

It was Cornet who won the only previous match between the pair, a 6-2 6-2 victory at the US Open way back in 2013. It will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out over 5 years later.

Barbora Strycova vs. Alize Cornet, Wuhan R1 Preview

🐉 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, R1 Preview
🇨🇿 Barbora Strycova vs. 🇫🇷 Alize Cornet

Two of the tour’s most entertaining players will go head-to-head at the opening round stage in Wuhan as Barbora Strycova takes on Alize Cornet. Interestingly it is Cornet who has been fairly dominant in this match-up in the past, Cornet holds a 6-2 head-to-head record over Strycova but heads into this match as the slight underdog.

Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic in action during her third-round match at the 2018 US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament

The pair bring fairly contrasting form into this opening round match in Wuhan. Strycova was in action last week in Tokyo where she played two tough matches, she beat Anett Kontaveit in an epic 3 set encounter before being beaten by Naomi Osaka in straight sets in what was a pretty competitive match. Conversely, Cornet has not won a match since Cincinnati and suffered a strangely one sided first round loss at the hands of Jennifer Brady in Guangzhou last week.

It was Alize Cornet who won the first 5 career meetings between the two, Strycova has won 2 of their last 3 matches. Overall it is Cornet with al 6-2 head-to-head advantage. Their most recent clash was at Roland Garros last year, Cornet claimed a comfortable 6-4 6-1 victory. Strycova has won the last 2 matches between the pair on a hard court.

Alize Cornet vs. Sara Errani, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, R1 Preview
🇫🇷 (32) Alize Cornet vs. 🇮🇹 Sara Errani

Alize Cornet and Sara Errani will renew hostilities when they meet at the opening round stage at Roland Garros on Sunday. This is a bit of a grudge match-up, two fierce competitors that don’t particularly like each other. Expect a long, tough battle between these two. Will the Frenchwoman prevail in Paris or will the Italian workhorse be too strong?

Alize Cornet has a long, long history in Paris. For so long Cornet has been the leader of French hopes on the women’s side but that is no longer the case with Garcia and Mladenovic moving past Cornet in the French pecking order. Cornet’s form in the lead-up to Roland Garros has been poor, Cornet was beaten in the opening round in Madrid, albeit a very tough draw against Svitolina and was unable to compete in Rome or Strasbourg. Prior to that Cornet suffered early round losses in Lugano and Stuttgart.

Sara Errani, a former finalist in Paris arrives at this years event with very little expectation. Errani may not be the player that she once was but she still has her competitive edge and desire to chase down every ball. Like Cornet, Errani’s recent form is not great. Most recently Errani suffered an opening round exit in Rome at the hands of Timea Babos and the Italian has a modest 5-5 record in main draw matches on clay in 2018.

Errani holds a 4-3 H2H advantage over Cornet. However, it is the Frenchwoman who has won the last couple of matches between the pair, most recently a 6-3 6-4 win in Rome last year.

Elise Mertens vs Alize Cornet, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R3 Preview
🇧🇪 Elise Mertens vs 🇫🇷 Alize Cornet

Elise Mertens and Alize Cornet have been presented a golden opportunity to reach the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park, both have never reached the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam. Mertens and Cornet will meet at the third round stage on Friday, the winner of this match will play either Lesia Kumkhum or Petra Martic for a spot In the quarter-finals. Clearly this is a very favourable draw, a unique opportunity, which of these two will step up and grab this opportunity?

Elise Mertens arrived at Melbourne Park full of confidence after winning the singles and doubles titles at the Hobart International. Mertens is competing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time. Mertens cruised through her first main draw match in Melbourne, beating Viktoria Kuzmova 6-2 6-1. The Belgian secured her spot in the third round with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Daria Gavrilova on Rod Laver Arena. Mertens found herself down 0-5 in the opening set but managed to save 8 set points on route to winning the next 7 games to take the first set. Mertens is clearly in great form right now having won 7 matches in a row.

Alize Cornet advanced to the third round courtesy of a huge upset victory over Julia Goerges, Cornet defeated the German 12th seed 6-4 6-3. Cornet entered the second round match as a huge outsider. Goerges entered the match on 15-match winning streak and a perfect 5-0 record over Cornet. However, it was the Frenchwoman that stepped up and played the better tennis on the night, one of the biggest wins for Cornet in recent times. In the opening round Cornet defeated Xinyu Wang 6-4 6-2.

This will be the first career meeting between Mertens and Cornet.

Julia Goerges vs Alize Cornet, Australian Open R2 Preview

Australian Open 🇦🇺 R2 Preview
🇩🇪 (12) Julia Goerges vs 🇫🇷 Alize Cornet

Julia Goerges is arguably the form player on tour right now. Goerges is on a 15-match winning streak after beating Sofia Kenin in straight sets in the opening round at Melbourne Park on day 1. Goerges has never made it past the fourth round at the Australian Open, the 12th seed will look to change that stat in 2018 given her current form. Goerges continues her campaign on Wednesday where she comes up against Alize Cornet in the second round. Goerges has won all 5 of the previous matches between the pair.

Goerges is full of confidence right now. Goerges arrived in Melbourne having won her last 3 tournaments. The German won Moscow and Zhuhai to end 2017 and started the new year by winning the title at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Goerges’ straight set win over Wozniacki in the Auckland final was particularly impressive. Goerges made a decent start to her Australian Open campaign, beating Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-4. Goerges served very well but was no quite at her best, she did what she needed to do.

Alize Cornet was given a very favourable opening round draw in Melbourne. Cornet defeated Chinese wild-card Xiyu Wang 6-4 6-2 in what was a fairly competitive match. Cornet had too much experience and class for her 16-year-old opponent. Cornet will face a huge step up in opposition when she takes on Julia Goerges in the second round.

Goerges holds a 5-0 head-to-head record over Cornet. Only 2 of those matches were recent enough to be relevant. A 6-4 6-0 win on clay in Stuttgart in 2016 and a 6-3 6-3 win on a hard court in Wuhan in 2015.

Alize Cornet vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Brisbane QF Preview

Brisbane International, Quarter-Final Preview
🇫🇷 Alize Cornet vs 🇧🇾 (Q) Aliaksandra Sasnovich

A huge opportunity presents itself to Alize Cornet and Aliaksandra Sasnovich when the pair collide at the quarter-final stage of the Brisbane International. The pair have had contrasting pathways through to the final. Cornet has not had to work too hard, winning a couple of quick matches. Conversely, Sasnovich has already won 5 matches this week having come through the qualifying draw, the last 3 victories were all from a set down.

Alize Cornet would have arrived in Brisbane hopeful of replicating her 2017 run to the final but would have considered herself a big underdog to do so. Suddenly the Frenchwoman is into the quarter-finals and the draw is open for Alize to again push toward the title at the Brisbane International. Cornet started the event with a win over Caroline Garcia who retired injured after losing the second set. Cornet booked her spot in the semi-finals with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich has made a brilliant start to the year. Sasnovich would not have expected to be playing in the quarter-finals in Brisbane. The Belarussian won 3 matches in a tough qualifying draw before coming from a set down to beat Kristina Mladenovic and Anett Kontaveit to reach the final 8 at the first premier level event of the year. Sasnovich ended 2017 in exciting fashion at the Fed Cup final with a win over Sloane Stephens, the signs are there that the world number 88 will be a player on the rise in 2018.

It was Aliaksandra Sasnovich who won the only previous meeting between the pair, a 6-4 1-6 6-4 victory in Miami last year. Can the Belarusian get the Cornet of Cornet again on Thursday to reach one of the biggest semi-final of her career?

🇫🇷 Alize Cornet vs 🇭🇷 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni

An interesting second round match-up at the Brisbane International sees Alize Cornet come up against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. This match-up features a huge contrast in styles, the explosive power of Lucic-Baroni up against the flare and touch of Cornet. Alize Cornet, the 2017 runner-up at the Brisbane International seemed down and out in her opening round match against Caroline Garcia. Cornet got lucky after she beaten in the opening set, Garcia’s level dropped off as she struggled with back injury. Garcia ultimately retied after losing the second set, handing Cornet a passage through to the second round.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni advanced to the second round in Brisbane by claiming her 400th career victory, a topsy-turvy 6-4 4-6 6-0 victory over Tatjana Maria. Lucic-Baroni struggled late in the second set, calling for the trainer on a few occasions. The Croatian caught fire in the third set, hitting winner after winning to move past the German.

Cornet holds a 2-1 record over Lucic-Baroni however it was the Croatian who won their most recent match. Lucic-Baroni won 6-4 6-1 at the U.S Open in 2016.
