Sydney International 🇦🇺🦈 R1 Preview
(WC) 🇦🇺 Samantha Stosur vs (LL) 🇩🇪 Carina Witthoeft
Samantha Stosur and Carina Witthoeft will go head-to-head for the first time when they meet at the first round stage of the Sydney International on Tuesday. The pressure will be on Stosur here, the Aussie will be desperate to avoid heading to Melbourne without a win to her name which has so often been the case over the last few years. Stosur was originally scheduled to play Julia Goerges in the opening round in Sydney but the Auckland champion pulled out of Sydney with a knee injury gifting her compatriot a lucky loser spot into the main draw. Will Witthoeft make the most of the opportunity or will Stosur claim a much needed win?
Stosur got her season off to a typically disappointing start at the Brisbane International last week. Stosur was completely outplayed in her opening round match with Anastasija Sevastova. Stosur was no match for Sevastova, beaten 6-1 6-3 in match where Stosur was unable to break the Latvian’s serve. In 2017 Stosur went through the Aussie summer without winning a match, 3 first round defeats, unfortunately for Stosur it looks she could be facing a similar fate in 2018.
Carina Witthoeft was unable to make her way through a tough qualifying draw in Sydney. Witthoeft made it through to the final round of qualifying courtesy of wins over Rodionova and Woolcock but fell at the final hurdle against Camila Giorgi, beaten 6-1 6-4. Witthoeft was fortunate to receive a lucky loser spot in the main draw courtesy of Julia Goerges withdrawing form the event. Will Witthoeft make the most her lucky loser spot?
