Caroline Garcia vs. Johanna Konta, US Open R1 Preview

🇺🇸🗽 US OPEN: R1 Preview
🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇬🇧 Johanna Konta

A blockbuster first round clash in New York sees the 6th seeded Caroline Garcia take on British number 1: Johanna Konta. This is a brutal opening round draw for both, Konta is certainly one of the most dangerous unseeded players in this year’s US Open draw. Konta has had the edge in this match-up of late, winning 3 of the last 4 matches between the pair, but Garcia has generally been the more impressive of the two of late.

Caroline Garcia of France in action during her third-round match at the 2018 Western & Southern Open WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Caroline Garcia brings decent form into the final Grand Slam of the year. Garcia had a couple of good wins in Montreal and New Haven where she reached the quarter-finals. Garcia is undoubtedly capable of causing a lot of damage at the highest level but she still struggles with inconsistency. Garcia has made it to the third round in the last couple of years in New York and will be aiming to go a couple of steps further in 2018 as the 6th seed.

Johanna Konta will be competing at a Grand Slam event without being seeded for the first time in a while. Perhaps this will be a favourable position for Konta as there is certainly far less pressure on her at the moment. Konta played 4 events in the lead-up to the US Open, her best result was a quarter-final showing in San Jose where she thrashed Serena Williams. Konta arrives in New York fresh from a second round withdrawal in New Haven last week due to a viral illness.

Konta holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Garcia. The pair met on two occasions in 2017, both went the distance. Garcia defeated Konta in a final set tiebreak in Indian Wells whilst most recently Konta won 7-6 4-6 6-4 at Wimbledon.

🇺🇸 Western & Southern Open, Cincinnati R3 Preview
🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇧🇾 Aryna Sabalenka

Caroline Garcia and Aryna Sabalenka will go head-to-head for the first time on Thursday when they meet at the third round stage of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. This looms as an exciting clash between two confident, aggressive, young competitors. Garcia and Sabalenka both enter this clash in great form, it will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out.

Caroline Garcia of France in action during the first round at the 2018 Western & Southern Open WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Caroline Garcia is starting to build momentum after a disappointing grass court swing. The Frenchwoman arrived in Cincinnati fresh off a quarter-final appearance in Montreal, Garcia defeated Magdalena Rybarikova and Maria Sharapova in Montreal which saw her reach enter the top 5 for the first time. Garcia started her Cincinnati campaign with another notable victory, defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-4 7-5, a gutsy win given Garcia was behind in each set.

Aryna Sabalenka also arrived in Cincinnati on the back of a good week in Montreal. Sabalenka claimed a big 3-set win over Caroline Wozniacki on route to a third round showing in Montreal. Sabalenka came from match point down to beat Wozniacki but lost from match point up against Elise Mertens in the next round. Sabalenka has already claimed 2 huge wins in Cincinnati, coming from a set down to defeat both Johanna Konta and Karolina Pliskova. The Belarusian’s fearless game is seeing her rise and rise up the WTA pecking order and there are no signs of that stopping.

🇨🇦 Rogers Cup, Montreal. QF Preview
🇷🇴 (1) Simona Halep vs. 🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia

A blockbuster quarter-final clash in Montreal sees former champion and world number 1 Simona Halep take on the red-hot 6th seeded Caroline Garcia. Halep battled through two matches on Thursday, less than 24 hours later she comes up against Garcia who is fresh from a dominant victory over Maria Sharapova. Halep has generally had the better of this match-up but Garcia will still fancy her chances here.

Simona Halep of Romania celebrates winning her third-round match at the 2018 Coupe Rogers WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Simona Halep started her Montreal campaign with an epic 3 set victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a 7-6 4-6 7-5 victory in a match that lasted over 3 hours and was played across two days. Halep had to front up again later that night, hours after her win over Pavlyuchenkova. Luckily for Halep it was a very comfortable match, a 6-2 6-2 win over Venus Williams, the American was clearly injured and was an easy kill for Halep.

Caroline Garcia enters this quarter-final clash full of confidence fresh from arguably her best performance of the season thus far. Garcia smashed Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-2 in a near-flawless performance. Garcia’s aggressive return of serve was the highlight of her win over Sharapova as was her devastating play from the baseline, very clean hitting that she maintained without hitting many unforced errors. Prior to that win Garcia came from a set down to defeat Magdalena Rybarikova.

Halep holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Garcia. Halep has won the last couple of matches between the two, including a 6-2 6-3 win in Rome earlier this year in their most recent match. Garcia’s sole victory over Halep came in last year’s Beijing final, a 6-4 7-6 win for the Frenchwoman.

Caroline Garcia vs. Maria Sharapova, Montreal R3 Preview

Rogers Cup, Montreal. R3 Preview
🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇷🇺 Maria Sharapova

Caroline Garcia and Maria Sharapova will renew hostilities when they meet at the third round stage of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday. It is Sharapova who has generally had the better of this match-up having won the first 4 meetings between the two. However, it was Garcia who beat Sharapova in their most recent meeting earlier this year in Stuttgart. Can the 6th seed make it back-to-back wins over the Russian?

Caroline Garcia of France in action during her first-round match at the 2018 Coupe Rogers WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Caroline Garcia kick-started her Rogers Cup campaign with a hard-fought 4-6 6-1 6-3 win over Magdalena Rybarikova. Garcia was wayward throughout the first set but cut back her unforced error tally in the second and third sets as she took control of the match with her strong court positioning and powerful game. Garcia will face a far more dangerous opponent in the next round against an in-form Sharapova.

Maria Sharapova has been brutal on route to the third round in Montreal. Sharapova started the week with a 6-1 6-2 win over Sesil Karatantcheva before producing one of her better performances in recent times to thrash the 12th seeded Daria Kasatkina 6-0 6-2. Sharapova has not won 3 consecutive matches on a hard court since Shenzhen in the first week on the year, can she change that in Montreal?

Sharapova holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Garcia, including two comfortable victories in their two previous meetings on a hard court. It was Garcia who won the their most recent match, a 3-6 7-6 6-4 win on clay in Stuttgart earlier this year. Expect another close match between two confident players when they meet in Montreal on Thursday.

Caroline Garcia vs. Magdalena Rybarikova, Montreal R2 Preview

🇨🇦 Rogers Cup, Montreal R2 Preview
🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇸🇰 Magdalena Rybarikova

The 6th seeded Caroline Garcia begins her Rogers Cup campaign on Tuesday with a second round clash against Magdalena Rybarikova. Garcia received a bye through the first round whilst Rybarikova came from a set and a break down to defeat Barbora Strycova. This should be an entertaining clash between two versatile players.

Caroline Garcia of France talks to the media at the 2018 Coupe Rogers WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Caroline Garcia will be back on court for the first time since a disappointing opening round loss at Wimbledon at the hands of Belinda Bencic. It has been over a month since that straight set loss at Wimbledon, so it is tough to know what to expect from Garcia in Montreal. What is for sure is Garcia will have the crowd on her side in Montreal, as is always the case with the French players.

Magdalena Rybarikova made an impressive start to her U.S hard court swing, fighting from the brink of defeat to defeat Barbora Strycova 3-6 7-6 6-2. Rybarikova looked destined for defeat throughout the second set, Strycova served for the match at 5-4 and had several leads in the tiebreak, however Rybarikova was much more composed and ultimately ran over the top of a Strycova.

Caroline Garcia holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Rybarikova. The most recent match between the pair took place in New Haven in 2015, Garcia claimed a 7-6 6-4 victory.

Caroline Garcia vs. Angelique Kerber, Roland Garros R4 Preview

🇫🇷 Roland Garros, R4 Preview
🇫🇷 (7) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇩🇪 (12) Angelique Kerber

A Fascinating fourth round clash at Roland Garros on Monday sees the 7th seeded Caroline Garcia take on the 12th seeded Angelique Kerber. Caroline Garcia is the last French player left in the singles draw across the men’s and women’s draws. Garcia had a big breakthrough in Paris last year where she reached the quarter-finals and will be keen to emulate that result in 2018. Kerber has the better of the H2H but Garcia is better suited to the clay.

Caroline Garcia of France in action during her second round match at the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Caroline Garcia has not been at her best in Paris but she has been good enough to get the job done. Garcia started the week with a straightforward demolition of Ying-Ying Duan before requiring 3 sets to get past Shuai Peng. Garcia produced her best performance in the third round where she defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1 6-3. It has been a fairly favourable draw for Garcia, her first big test will come against Kerber.

Angelique Kerber has moved into the second week in Paris without dropping a set. A great result for the German who had suffered back-to-back opening round exits at Roland Garros in the last 2 years. Kerber started the event with a couple of easy wins over Mona Barthel and Ana Bogdan. Kerber faced a real test in the third round where she played Kiki Bertens, a tough 7-6 7-6 victory. Kerber was clutch under pressure and came out on top in the important moments.

Kerber holds a 4-2 H2H advantage over Garcia. Kerber has won 4 of the last 5 matches between the pair, most recently a comfortable 6-1 6-1 victory in Indian Wells earlier this year.

Caroline Garcia vs. Ying-Ying Duan, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, R1 Preview
🇫🇷 (7) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇨🇳 Ying-Ying Duan

The French number 1: Caroline Garcia opens her Roland Garros campaign against China’s Ying-Ying Duan. Garcia seemingly turned her career around at Roland Garros last year with a quarter-final showing, her best performance at a Grand Slam, she has not looked back since. 12 months later Garcia enters this years event as a genuine contender, the first time a French woman has been in this position for a while.

Caroline Garcia of France during practice of the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Garcia brings really good form into the second Grand Slam of the year. The 7th seed had a really good run to the semi-finals in Madrid where she beat quality opponents in Cibulkova, Martic, Goerges and Suarez Navarro before succumbing to Kiki Bertens. A week later Garcia reached the quarter-finals in Rome with wins over Babos and Stephens before succumbing to Simona Halep.

The form of Ying-Ying Duan heading into Paris is awful. Duan played a couple of lower level events in China of late and suffered early round exits. Clay is easily Duan’s least preferred surface, she plays very little tennis on this surface and will enter this tough opening round match with Garcia as a huge outsider and nothing to lose.

This will be the first career meeting between Garcia and Duan.

Caroline Garcia vs. Julia Goerges, Madrid R3 Preview

Mutua Madrid Open, R3 Preview
🇫🇷 (7) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇩🇪 (11) Julia Goerges

An exciting third round clash in Madrid sees Caroline Garcia come up against Julia Goerges. Garcia and Goerges have rocketed up the ranking in recent times, both have dramatically improved their games and are more consistent and reliable than ever. Expect to see a lot of flashy winners in this match-up as two of the most aggressive players on tour go head-to-head…

Caroline Garcia of France in action at the 2018 Mutua Madrid Open

Caroline Garcia is building momentum. Garcia arrived in Madrid on the back of a nice run to the semi-finals in Stuttgart where she claimed notable wins over Maria Sharapova and Elina Svitolina. Garcia has made her way into the third round in Madrid without dropping a set. Garcia started the week with a 6-1 7-5 win over Caroline Garcia before beating Petra Martic 6-3 7-5. Garcia almost made a mess of her match with Martic as she saw her 4-0 lead in the second set turn into a 4-5 0-30 deficit but Garcia caught fire with her back to the wall as she blasted winner after winner past Martic to end the match in straight sets.

Julia Goerges has had two contrasting matches on route to the third round. Goerges started the week with an easy 6-2 6-4 win over Timea Babos before having to dig deep to come from a set and a break down to defeat Lara Arruabarrena 2-6 6-4 6-2. This is the first time Georges has reached the third round stage in Madrid since her run to the semi-finals in 2011.

It was Garcia who won the only previous match between the pair, a 4-6 6-3 6-4 win in Beijing in 2016. Can Goerges reverse their previous result? Or will Garcia be too strong?

Caroline Garcia vs. CoCo Vandeweghe, Stuttgart SF Preview

Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Stuttgart SF #1 Preview
🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia vs. 🇺🇸 (wc) CoCo Vandeweghe

Caroline Garcia and CoCo Vandeweghe will do battle in Saturday’s first semi-final from the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. Garcia and Vandeweghe both head into this semi-final clash with a heap of momentum, both have claimed multiple victories over top quality opposition on route to the final 4. This promises to be an exciting clash between two flashy opponents, who be the first to book their ticket in Sundays final?

Caroline Garcia of France in action during her quarter-final match at the 2018 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Caroline Garcia is having her best week of the season thus far. Garcia started the week in style as she came from a set down to defeat 3-time former Stuttgart champion Maria Sharapova 2-6 7-6 6-4. Garcia has gone the distance in all 3 of her matches this week, typical of the Frenchwoman who is one of the tour’s 3 set specialists. In the second round Garcia scrapped past Marta Kostyuk 6-1 3-6 7-5 while it was at the quarter-final stage that Garcia claimed her biggest win, a 6-7 6-4 6-2 win over Elina Svitolina. Garcia fought back from a set and a break down to win her third consecutive match over Svitolina, incredibly Garcia lost the opening set in a tiebreak in all 3 of those victories.

CoCo Vandeweghe has put together a surprisingly impressive run in Stuttgart. Vandeweghe blasted past Stephens in the opening round where she dropped just 1 game before battling past defending champion Laura Siegemund in 3 sets. Like Garcia, it was at the quarter-final stage where Vandeweghe claimed her biggest scalp, a 6-4 6-1 win over world number 1 Simona Halep. On paper Vandeweghe’s win over Halep was one of the biggest of her career, especially given it was on the American’s least preferred surface. The highlight of Vandeweghe’s game this week has been her serve, her biggest weapon is working well.

The H2H record between the pair is split at 1 win apiece heading into this match. Both of their previous matches were in Wuhan, Garcia won 6-3 6-2 in 2014 whilst more recently it was Vandeweghe who won 6-3 6-7 7-6 in 2015.

Elina Svitolina vs. Caroline Garcia, Stuttgart QF Preview

Porsche Tennis GP, Stuttgart QF Preview
🇺🇦 (3) Elina Svitolina vs. 🇫🇷 (6) Caroline Garcia

Elina Svitolina and Caroline Garcia will renew hostilities when they meet at the quarter-final stage of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Friday. Garcia got the better of Svitolina on 2 occasions last year, on both occasions Svitolina was in a winning position, the Ukrainian will head into this match with a point to prove and revenge on her mind.

Caroline Garcia of France in action at the 2018 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Svitolina and Garcia both survived scares in the second round against talented young opponents. Svitolina was totally outplayed by Marketa Vondrousova but her Czech opponent’s level soon deteriorated before she retired injured in the third set. Meanwhile, Garcia was pushed deep into a third set by Marta Kostyuk. Garcia’s experience ultimately played a big part at the pointy end of the match as the Frenchwoman claimed a 6-1 3-6 7-5 victory. Garcia did also produce a strong opening round performance where she beat Maria Sharapova in 3 sets whilst Svitolina received a bye through the opening round.

It is Garcia who heads into this match with a 2-1 H2H advantage. Svitolina easily beat Garcia in their first meeting in Cincinnati back in 2015 but it is Garcia who won their two recent matches at the end of last year. A 6-7 7-5 7-6 win in Beijing and a 6-7 6-3 7-5 win at the WTA Finals. Can Svitolina get revenge in Stuttgart?
