๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Camila Giorgi vs. ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova

An interesting round of 16 clash at Wimbledon sees Camila Giorgi and Ekaterina Makarova go head-to-head for the first time. The draw has opened up nicely for these two who both claimed victory over seeded opposition on route to the this stage. This is a big opportunity for both, both are playing well and will see this as a very winnable match.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in action during her second-round match at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships Grand Slam tournament

Camila Giorgi is into the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time since the US Open in 2013. Giorgi has long been one of the tourโ€™s biggest wasted talents, perhaps this is where she makes her big move? The Italian started the event with a topsy-turvy 3 set victory over 21st seeded Anastasija Sevastova. Giorgi went on to defeat Madison Brengle in 2 sets before saving match point on route to a 3-6 7-6 6-2 victory against Katerina Siniakova.

Ekaterina Makarova has made it through to the second week at Wimbledon for the third time and is 1 win away from emulating her previous best result in 2014. Makarova stared her campaign with a 7-6 2-6 6-3 win over Petra Martic before claiming a dramatic 6-4 1-6 7-5 victory over the 2nd seeded Caroline Wozniacki. Makarova led Wozniacki 5-1 in the deciding set before squandering several match points as her lead was evaporated. At 5-5 Makarova played an outstanding game to hold and she went on to break serve in the next game to secure an outstanding win. Makarova backed up that win over Wozniacki with a 4-6 6-4 6-1 win over Lucie Safarova.

It will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out in the first career meeting between the pair.

Ekaterina Makarova vs. Petra Martic, Wimbledon R1 Preview

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Wimbledon, R1 Preview
๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova vs. ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท Petra Martic

Ekaterina Makarova and Petra Martic will go head-to-head for the first time when they meet at the opening round stage of the Wimbledon Championships. This is one of the toughest opening round match-ups on day 1 as two of the most dangerous unseeded players do battle. Who will prevail?

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in action at the 2018 Nature Valley International WTA Premier tennis tournament

Makarovaโ€™s form throughout 2018 has been dreadful. The Russian has amassed a very poor 6-10 W/L record in 2018, very poor by her usual standards. The Russian suffered back-to-back first round losses in Birmingham and Eastbourne, beaten by Alize Cornet in 3 sets in Birmingham and Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets in Eastbourne. Nevertheless, Makarova is a former quarter-finalist at Wimbledon and does usually play well on grass.

Petra Martic started 2018 on fire but her results have significantly deteriorated of late. Martic played just 1 tournament on grass before heading to Wimbledon, a second loss in Birmingham to Mihaela Buzarnescu from a set up. Martic achieved her equal best result at a Grand Slam at Wimbledon 12 months ago when she reached the fourth round stage.

This looks like a very even match-up on paper, expect a close one!

Barbora Strycova vs. Ekaterina Makarova, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, R2 Preview
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ (26) Barbora Strycova vs. ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova

Barbora Strycova and Ekaterina Makarova will renew hostilities when they meet at the second round stage at Roland Garros on Wednesday. This looms as a fascinating encounter between two very experienced and accomplished opponents, both have struggled for the majority of 2018 and will see this a big opportunity to gain some much needed confidence.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in action during her first-round match at the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Barbora Strycova arrived in Paris having lost 8 consecutive matches, a rare losing streak for the usually very consistent player. Strycova was seemingly heading for a 9th consecutive loss when she comfortably dropped the opening set of her first round match in Paris to Kurumi Nara but Strycova responded to claim a much needed 1-6 6-3 6-4 victory.

Like Strycova, Ekaterina Makarova brings poor form into the second Grand Slam of the year having not won a match on clay in 2018 at the tour level. However, the Russian was untroubled in her opening round match in Paris, comfortably beating the potentially dangerous Saisai Zheng 6-4 6-1.

It is Strycova who holds a 4-3 head-to-head record over Makarova. The most recent match between the pair took place earlier this year in Sydney, Strycova won easily 6-4 6-1.

Roland Garros has been the least successful Grand Slam for both Strycova and Makarova, clay is the least preferred surface for both. It will be interesting to see who steps up and takes control of this match.

Simona Halep vs. Ekaterina Makarova, Madrid R1 Preview

Mutua Madrid Open R1 Preview
๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด (1) Simona Halep vs. ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova

Two-time defending champion Simona Halep will begin her 2018 Madrid campaign with a potentially tricky first round clash against Ekaterina Makarova. Madrid has proven to be Halepโ€™s best tournament over the last few years, the reasonably quick clay court conditions are perfect for the Romanianโ€™s game. Makarova has beaten Halep a couple of times before, can the Russian cause a huge opening round upset?

Simona Halep of Romania practices at the 2018 Mutua Madrid Open

Halep arrives in Madrid on the back of a couple of disappointing results. Halep started the year in style but her results of late have not been up to the standards of a world number 1. Halep started her clay court season in Stuttgart where she suffered a shocking straight set exit at the hands of CoCo Vandeweghe at the quarter-final stage. Halep has lost 3 of her last 5 matches at the tour level. The good news for Halep is that she has a remarkable record in Madrid, Halep is the two-time defending champion and also reached the final in 2014.

Makarova has been one of the tourโ€™s biggest disappointments in 2018, the Russian is having one of her worst seasons in recent times. Amazingly Makarova is yet to win back-to-back matches in 2018, very surprising given how consistent Makarova usually is. Makarova arrives in Madrid on the back of a disappointing opening round loss in Rabat last week where she suffered a 3 set loss to Aleksandra Krunic.

Halep holds a 4-2 H2H record over Makarova. Halep won their most recent match 6-3 6-0 in Doha earlier this year. This will be their first career meeting on a clay court.

Angelique Kerber vs Ekaterina Makarova, Indian Wells R2 Preview

BNP Paribas Open, ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒด Indian Wells R2 Preview
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช (10) Angelique Kerber vs ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova

Angelique Kerber will begin her 2018 BNP Paribas Open campaign with a difficult second round clash against Russiaโ€™s Ekaterina Makarova. This has proven to be a troublesome match-up for Kerber in recent times as Makarova won both of the matches between the pair in 2017. Kerber is back to her best in 2018 and will have revenge on her mind as she enters this match in Indian Wells.

Angelique Kerber has been one of, if not the most consistent player on tour in 2018. Kerber has amasses an impressive 19/3 win/loss record across all competitions in 2018. Kerber arrives in Indian Wells on the back of a solid Middle Eastern swing, the 2-time Grand Slam champion reached the quarter-finals in Doha and the semi-finals in Dubai. The one disappointment for Kerber has been the similarities in all 3 of her losses this year, defeated by Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina, all very similar types of opponents, players Kerber would like her chances against.

Makarova got off to a slow start in 2018 but is slowly building some nice momentum. Makarova progressed to the second round at the BNP Paribas Open with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Kirsten Flipkens. The problem for Makarova is that she has not been able to win back-to-back matches in 2018, inconsistency is her biggest problem right now. The Russian will however head into this match fairly confident given her recent success over the German.

These two are no strangers to each other. The pair have met on 13 previous occasions, Kerber holds a slender 7-6 H2H advantage. Makarova has won the two most recent matches between the pair, both in 2017. A 6-2 6-2 at Roland Garros and an epic 6-4 1-6 7-6 win in Cincinnati. On hard courts, the H2H record is split at 3 wins apiece.

Jelena Ostapenko made a wayward start to her 2018 campaign last week in Shenzhen. Ostapenko was defeated by Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets 1-6 4-6. Ostapenko was not even close to her best, hitting a ton of unforced errors in what as a disappointing start to the year, albeit against a difficult opponent.

Ekaterina Makarova will begin her 2018 season on Sunday at the Sydney International. Makarova had a relatively disappointing season in 2017, ending the year just outside the top 33. Makarova is good enough to push back into the top 20. It will be interesting to see how she starts her 2018 season on Sunday

Ekaterina Makarova vs Carla Suarez Navarro, U.S Open R3 Preview

US Open, ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ—ฝ๐Ÿš• R3 Preview + Prediction
๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova vs ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Carla Suarez Navarro

Ekaterina Makarova finally claimed her first career victory over Caroline Wozniacki to move into the third round in New York where she will face Carla Suarez Navarro. Makarova was seemingly on route to a straight set win over Wozniacki but was dragged into a third set where she regrouped to secure a 6-2 6-7 6-1 win. Makarova had a 0-7 head-to-head record heading into her match with Wozniacki and will need to overcome another very negative head-to-head record if she is progress any further in New York. Suarez Navarro holds a 6-2 head-to-head record over Makarova and easily accounted for the Russian earlier this year in Eastbourne. Makarova is in much better form heading into this match and despite the negative record, she does have the game to really trouble the Spaniard.

Caroline Wozniacki will look to continue her domination of Ekaterina Makarova when they collide at the second round stage of the U.S Open on Wednesday. Wozniacki holds a 7-0 head-to-head record over Makarova, an incredible record given Makarova is a very dangerous opponent. Wozniacki and Makarova both cruised through their opening round matches on Monday, Wozniacki defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 7-5 whilst Makarova beat Mona Barthel 6-2 6-1, both bring good form into this second round clash.

Roland Garros, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐ŸŒ R2 Preview + Prediction
๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Ekaterina Makarova vs ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Lesia Tsurenko

Ekaterina Makarova became the first woman to eliminate a top seed from the Roland Garros draw in the opening round of the tournament when she cruised past Angelique Kerber in straight sets on day one of the tournament. Makarova will have gained a great deal of confidence from that win and will need to be on her game as she enters a reasonably tough second round clash against Lesia Tsurenko on Wednesday in Paris.
