Angelique Kerber vs Irina Falconi, Wimbledon R1 Preview

Wimbledon 🇬🇧💂🍓 Day 2, R1 Match Preview:
(1) 🇩🇪 Angelique Kerber vs (Q) 🇺🇸 Irina Falconi

Top seeded Angelique Kerber will begin her 2017 Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday where she takes on American qualifier Irina Falconi. Kerber easily won the only previous match between the pair and will be a strong favourite heading into this match. Kerber has hardly been a dominant world number 1, her title as the top player in the world will come under great threat over the next week as the German is defending finalist points from 2016, if Kerber can rediscover her 2016 form there is no reason why she can’t add to her Grand Slam collection in two weeks’ time.

Karolina Pliskova vs Irina Falconi, Wimbledon R1 Preview

(11) Karolina Pliskova vs Irina Falconi

Karolina Pliskova has been handed a seemingly comfortable opening round fixture, the Czech will open her 2015 Wimbledon campaign against American: Irina Falconi. Pliskova enters Wimbledon as a genuine contender, the first time such expectations have been placed on Karolina heading into a Grand Slam. It will be interesting to see how Karolina handles the pressure over the next fortnight, her strong mentality suggests she will handle the pressure quite well.

Despite having a booming serve and punishing groundstrokes, Karolina hasn’t made an impact on the grass courts in the past. Pliskova has only managed to reach the second round in her past two Wimbledon campaigns, Karolina will want to go much further this time around.

Pliskova’s preparation for Wimbledon has been close to perfect. Pliskova arrives at Wimbledon full of confidence after reaching the final in Birmingham and getting a few more matches under her belt in Eastbourne. Pliskova defeated Carla Suarez Navarro and Kristina Mladenovic on route to the final in Birmingham where succumbed to Angelique Kerber in an epic final.

Despite losing the final to Kerber in a third set tiebreaker, Pliskova’s Performance in that match was extremely encouraging, she matched one the tours most competent grass court competitors, a good sign heading into Wimbledon.

Irina Falconi is also yet to go any further than the second round at Wimbledon. That is unlikely to change this year. The American has had a typically lacklustre season, yet to pick up any notable victories. Furthermore, the American’s game isn’t suited to the grass, Irina has only picked up one main draw victory on grass over the past three seasons.

Karolina Pliskova won the only previous encounter between these two, a 7-6 6-3 victory in the final round of qualifying at the Sydney International back in 2013. A lot has changed since then, Karolina has improved dramatically and is now one of the tour's biggest stars.

This should be a rather comfortable victory for Karolina to open her 2015 Wimbledon campaign. Falconi doesn’t have the weapons to trouble Pliskova, the Czech is likely to be all over the American and will come through this match in straight sets .

Prediction: Karolina Pliskova to defeat Irina Falconi in 2 sets

Garbine Muguruza vs Irina Falconi, Indian Wells R2 Preview

(19) Garbine Muguruza vs (WC) Irina Falconi

Garbine Muguruza will kickstart her Indian Wells campaign on friday when she takes on American wild card, Irina Falconi. Garbine will be looking to continue her solid start to the season with another strong performance this week in the Californian desert.

Garbine has been more consistent this year and has shown glimpses of her best tennis however the Spaniard has been unable to play her best tennis when it has really mattered. Most notably suffering disappointing three set losses to Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals in Sydney and Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals in Dubai. Garbine will look to go a couple of steps better this week and claim the biggest title of her career.

The Spaniard has a tough draw, potentially facing Karolina Pliskova in the third round, Simona Halep in the fourth round, Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals and Serena Williams in the semi-finals. However, Garbine will not fear any opponent, she knows that her best tennis can beat anyone. Garbine should have little trouble disposing of her second round opponent on Friday.

Garbine’s opponent: Irina Falconi, advanced to the second round courtesy of a 7-6 6-4 upset victory over Ajla Tomljanovic. The match was played at an awfully low standard, the two combined for a total of 17 winners and an embarrassing 91 unforced errors. Tomljanovic was particularly wayward throughout the match, playing uncresseseraily aggressive, stupid tennis.. Ajla finished the match with a whopping 51 unforced, gifting Falconi a place in the second round.

This will be the first career between Garbine and Irina. This should be a rather straight forward match for Garbine, the Spaniard does all the important things much better than her American opponent.

The slower conditions at the BNP Paribas Open shouldn’t trouble Garbine, she will have all the time in the world to dictate rallies from the baseline and dominate her much less powerful opponent. It would be a great shock if Garbine doesn't win this match in straight sets.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Irina Falconi in 2 sets
