U.S Open R2: Dominika Cibulkova vs Jessica Pegula
Dominika Cibulkova stormed into the second round at Flushing Meadows with an impressive three set victory over the seventh seeded Ana Ivanovic. Cibulkova’s section of the draw is wide open, the Slovakian can significantly improve her ranking over the next fortnight with a deep run at Flushing Meadows. Cibulkova comes up against a qualifier in the second round, American Jessica Pegula.
Dominika Cibulkova produced one her best performances of the season thus far to record a 6-3 3-6 6-3 first round win against Ana Ivanovic on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Cibulkova was at her feisty best for long periods of the match, the Slovakian’s damaging return of serve proved to be one of the biggest differences in the match. Domi punished Ivanovic’s predictable serve, winning nearly half of her return points. Cibulkova needs to be wary of a let-down coming into a second round match that she is very much expected to win.
Jessica Pegula’s first ever main draw appearance at Flushing Meadows got off to the perfect start on Monday. The American qualifier defeated Alison Van Uytvank 7-5 6-3 to advance to the second round. Jessica showed some good form during qualifying, defeating Gasparyan on route to her first main draw birth in New York.
This will be the first career meeting between Cibulkova and Pegula. This is a potentially dangerous match for Cibulkova, the Slovakian was famously upset by CiCi Bellis at the U.S Open last year and will be desperate to avoid a similar loss here. Domi’s performance against Ivanovic was very impressive, she looks to be back to her very best, moving extremely well around the court. Domi should be far too good to let an opportunity like this slip by.
