Wimbledon 🇬🇧 First Round Match Preview + Prediction
(4) 🇩🇪 Angelique Kerber vs (wc) 🇬🇧 Laura Robson
Angelique Kerber will begin her 2016 Wimbledon campaign with a potentially dangerous first round clash against local hopeful Laura Robson. The German is the clear favourite heading into this match and rightfully so given Robson’s recent struggles with injury and poor form. However, the Brit has beaten Angie at Wimbledon before and will once again be energised by the home crowd support as she looks to cause a major upset at SW19.
Angelique Kerber’s Grand Slam results in 2016 have been completely hit or miss, the German achieved the ultimate success at the Australian Open earlier this year where she claimed her first Grand Slam title but suffered a disappointing first round exit at Roland Garros. Angie’s 2016 results have generally been quite erratic but the German seems to be in good place heading into one of her favourite tournaments of the season. Angie played some decent tennis in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago where she reached the quarter-final stage before falling to Carla Suarez Navarro in a close three set match. Kerber has spent a good amount of time at the All England Club preparing for the event, a tournament she has had some good success at in the past having reached the semi-finals in 2012 and the quarter-finals in 2014.
Laura Robson’s return to the top level in 2016 has been largely unsuccessful. Robson has managed to claim just 1 main draw victory in 2016 and more recently she showed fairly poor form on the grass court lead-up events. Robson suffered disappointing losses to Daniela Hantuchova and Michelle Larcher de Brito and was unable to advance past the qualifying stage in Birmingham and Eastbourne.
Angelique Kerber holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Robson. Kerber won their most recent match, a 6-1 6-2 win in Beijing in 2013. Interestingly, it was Robson who won their only previous match on a grass court when she claimed a 4-6 7-6 6-3 win at the first round stage at Wimbledon in 2011. It’s tough to see how Robson can produce a similar result on this occasion given her result poor form.
I suspect Kerber will be far too solid for Robson in this first round encounter. Robson has struggled against players that are at a much, much lower level than Kerber and would need to raise her game substantially to even be competitive in this match-up. Kerber’s preparation for the tournament has been good and she will come into this match focused and keen to avoid another shock early round exit after what happened at Roland Garros a couple of months ago. All signs point to a convincing win for the German.
