Barbora Strycova vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Wimbledon R1 Preview

🇬🇧 Wimbledon, R1 Preview
🇨🇿 (23) Barbora Strycova vs. 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova

A tough opening round match-up sees the 23rd seeded Barbora Strycova take on Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova loomed as one of the most dangerous unseeded players heading into the draw ceremony, the veteran’s ranking has dropped significantly of late but she is always dangerous in these big events and has a good record against Strycova.

Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic in action during her third round match at the 2018 Nature Valley International WTA Premier tennis tournament

Barbora Strycova’s recent form has been good. Strycova played a couple of events on grass before Wimbledon, a semi-final showing in Birmingham followed by a third round exit in Eastbourne where she was beaten by Karolina Pliskova. Wimbledon was the scene of Strycova’s greatest result at a Grand Slam, a quarter-final showing in 2014. Grass is arguably Strycova’s best surface.

Kuznetsova’s form in the lead-up to Wimbledon has been far less impressive. Kuznetsova was comfortably beaten in Mallorca and Eastbourne, a straight less loss to Sevastova in the opening round in Mallorca and a thrashing at the hands of Elise Mertens in the second round at Eastbourne. Grass may typically be considered Kuznetsova’s worst surface but she has a good recent record at Wimbledon and made it all the way to the quarter-finals last year.

Kuznetsova holds a perfect 2-0 H2H record over Strycova. The most recent match between the pair took place at Indian Wells in 2014, a 6-3 6-3 win for Kuznetsova.

Garbine Muguruza vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, R1 Preview
🇪🇸 (3) Garbine Muguruza vs. 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova

The pick of the opening round matches in Paris sees two former Roland Garros champions collide as 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza takes on 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. This will be the second year in a row that Muguruza has come up against a fellow Roland Garros champion in the opening round after beating Francesca Schiavone in the opening round last year.

Garbine Muguruza of Spain practices ahead of the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Muguruza’s form has not been great in 2018. The Spaniard’s form during the clay court swing in the leadup to Paris was lacklustre, opening round defeats in Stuttgart and Rome and a third round showing in Madrid, really poor given what Muguruza is capable of. Muguruza’s most recent loss was a brutal one, beaten by Daria Gavrilova in a marathon match in Rome, Muguruza gave up a 4-0 lead in the deciding set, squandering match points to lose a final set tiebreak.

Kuznetsova’s form has also been unimpressive heading into the second Grand Slam of the year. Kuznetsova only recently started her season after injury saw her miss the first couple of months of the year. Kuznetsova has amassed a poor 3-6 win/loss record in 2018, most recently the Russian was beaten in the opening round in Madrid at the hands of Petra Martic and suffered a second round loss in Rome at the hands of Anett Kontaveit.

This has been a great match-up for Muguruza. The Spaniard holds a 5-1 head-to-head record over Kuznetsova and has won the last 5 matches between the pair. Muguruza has beaten Kuznetsova on every surface, most recently it was a 6-2 5-7 7-5 win for Muguruza in Cincinnati last year. Whilst the H2H record looks lopsided, all of the matches between the pair have been close.

Garbine Muguruza vs Svetlana Kuznetsova, Cincinnati QF Preview

Western & Southern Open, 🇺🇸🌉 Cincinnati QF Preview + Prediction
(4) 🇪🇸 Garbine Muguruza vs (8) 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova

Garbine Muguruza and Svetlana Kuznetsova will go head-to-head for the third time in 2017 when they meet at the quarter-final stage of the Western & Southern Open on Friday. Kuznetsova will be hoping it is third time lucky against Muguruza this year as it was the Spaniard who won their two previous matches this year. Muguruza enters this quarter-final clash on a high after saving match points to defeat Madison Keys for the first time in four attempts. Kuznetsova is also playing good tennis this week and will be eager to win this match given her recent disappointments against Muguruza. Recent form suggests it is Muguruza that will continue her recent dominance of Kuznetsova.

(7) 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova vs (9) 🇵🇱 Agnieszka Radwanska

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnieszka Radwanska will renew hostilities when they go head-to-head at Wimbledon in the fourth round stage. Kuznetsova has traditionally been quite dominant over Radwanska, the Russian holds an overall 13-4 record over the Pole, Kuznetsova has won 9 of the last 10 matches between the pair. (7) 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova vs (Q) 🇹🇳 Ons Jabeur

7th seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova begins her 2017 Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday when she comes up against Tunisian qualifier Ons Jabeur. Wimbledon has generally been Kuznetsova’s least successful slam, unsurprisingly given grass is the surface that Kuznetsova is least comfortable on. The Russian is likely to be vulnerable early in London and is unlikely to have things all her own way against Jabeur, an opponent that posses extreme power and is in decent form having won three matches in the qualifying draw.
