Mihaela Buzarnescu vs. Veronica Cepede Royg, Nottingham R1 Preview

🇬🇧 Nature Valley Open, Nottingham R1 Preview
🇷🇴 (5) Mihaela Buzarnescu vs. 🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede Royg

The fifth seeded Mihaela Buzarnescu comes up against Paraguay’s Veronica Cepede Royg, an interesting opening round clash at the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham. Heading into the grass court season there will be little expectations for both Buzarnescu and Cepede Royg, two players that typically play their best tennis on a clay court.

Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania in action during her fourth-round match at the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Mihaela Buzarnescu continues to reach new heights. The Romanian caused one of the biggest upsets of the tournament at Roland Garros where she eliminated tournament favourite Elina Svitolina at the third round stage. Buzarnescu also made it to the quarter-finals in the doubles draw so she arrives in Nottingham full of confidence with a career high singles ranking inside the top 30.

Conversely, Veronica Cepede Royg’s ranking has plummeted to well outside the top 100 after an opening round exit at Roland Garros, failing to defend her round of 16 points from the previous year despite a gallant 3 set loss to Petra Kvitova. It will be important for Cepede Royg to pick up as many points as she can during the grass swing or she risks losing direct entry to the biggest events later in the year.

This will be the first career meeting between Buzarnescu and Cepede Royg, it will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out on a grass court.

Daria Gavrilova vs Veronica Cepede Royg, Acapulco QF Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, 🇲🇽🌴 Acapulco QF Preview
🇦🇺 (3) Daria Gavrilova vs. 🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede Royg

An interesting quarter-final match-up in Acapulco sees the third seeded Daria Gavrilova come up against Paraguay’s Veronica Cepede Royg. Gavrilova has scrapped her way into the final in 8 in Acapulco, the Aussie has not been at her best but has competed well enough to stay alive. Cepede Royg is playing great tennis, defeating two more fancied opponents to reach the final 8 in Acapulco. Can Cepede Royg claim a third consecutive upset victory?

Daria Gavrilova is competing in Acapulco the first time. The Aussie started the week with an unconvincing 3 set win over Madison Brengle, a 4-6 6-3 6-3 triumph. Gavrilova overcame a couple of tough moments to get past Mexican wild card Renata Zarazúa, 7-5 6-3. Gavrilova’s serve continues to be a big problem, Gavrilova has hit a whopping 23 double faults in her first 2 matches this week. Gavrilova will need to improve her level if she is to advance any further this week as she comes up against an in-form Cepede Royg on Thursday.

It has been a brilliant week for Cepede Royg. The Paraguayan started the event with a memorable 4-6 7-6 6-3 win over Belinda Bencic. Cepede Royg backed up one of the biggest wins of her career with an equally impressive win, a 7-6 6-1 win over the 5th seeded Irina-Camelia Begu. Unlike Gavrilova, Cepede Royg is serving very well this week. Cepede Royg was broken on just one occasion in her win over Begu and was strong on serve against Bencic.

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Irina-Camelia Begu vs Veronica Cepede Royg, Acapulco R2 Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, 🇲🇽🌴 Acapulco R2 Preview
🇷🇴 (5) Irina-Camelia Begu vs 🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede Royg

An interesting second round match-up in Acapulco on Wednesday sees the 5th seeded Irina-Camelia Begu take on Paraguay’s Veronica Cepede Royg. Begu and Cepede Royg both progressed to the second round in Acapulco courtesy of gritty comeback victories in the opening round. This should be a close match between two fairly similar types of opponents.

Begu looked down and out on several occasions during her opening round win over Christina McHale, Begu was too solid in the end as the 5th seed claimed a 3-6 6-2 6-4 win. Begu was twice down a break in the deciding set but immediately got back to parity on each occasion. Begu has generally been in decent form in 2018 and has a good opportunity to do some damage this week in Acapulco.

Cepede Royg claimed one of the biggest wins of her career to secure her spot in the second round in Acapulco. The Paraguayan defied the odds to come from a set down and defeat Belinda Bencic, a 4-6 7-6 6-3 victory. Cepede Royg is playing the best tennis of her career at the moment, her tennis on a hard court has improved greatly, she would not have been able to beat a player like Bencic on a hard court a few years ago.

It is Begu who holds a 2-1 record over Cepede Royg. All 3 of their previous matches were on a clay court in 2014. It was Cepede Royg who won their most recent match, 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the final of an ITF 50K event.

Veronica Cepede Royg vs Belinda Bencic, Acapulco R1 Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, 🇲🇽🌴 Acapulco R1 Preview
🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede Royg vs 🇨🇭 Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic will begin her 2018 Abierto Mexicano campaign on Monday with an opening round clash against Paraguay’s Veronica Cepede Royg. This will be the first career meeting between Cepede Royg and Bencic. It is Bencic who heads into this match as a strong favourite but Cepede Royg is rarely a pushover, can the Paraguayan cause an opening round upset in Acapulco?

Belinda Bencic started the season in great form. Bencic didn’t really have an off-season, instead she competed at a number of ITF and WTA 125K events where she won 3 titles in a row. However, the transition to success at the higher level has not been immediate. Bencic suffered a big setback when she was beaten in the second round at the Australian Open by Lesia Kumkhum. More recently, Bencic suffered consecutive straight set losses in Switzerland’s unsuccessful Fed Cup tie with the Czech Republic. Bencic was beaten by Barbora Strycova and Petra Kvitova. It will be interesting to see what level Bencic will bring to Acapulco.

Veronica Cepede Royg was the hero for Paraguay as she guided the Paraguayan Fed Cup team into the world group 2 playoffs with a critical epic 3 set win over Beatriz Haddad Maia. Cepede Royg has improved her tennis on hard courts in recent times, she is certainly a more aggressive player than in the past and is willing to step up into the court more often, something she will need to do against Bencic.

It will be interesting to see how competitive Cepede Royg can be in the first career meeting between the pair.

Ashleigh Barty vs Veronica Cepede Royg, Sydney R1 Preview

Sydney International 🇦🇺🦈 R1 Prediction
🇦🇺 Ashleigh Barty vs (Q) 🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede Royg

Ashleigh Barty will be desperate for a good week in Sydney after a shock first round loss in Brisbane last week. Barty will begin her Sydney campaign on Monday with a first round clash against Paraguayan qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg. This will be the first career meeting between Barty and Cepede Royg. The Australian will enter this match as a strong favourite but the 21-year-old is under pressure after her loss in Brisbane last week. Conversely, Cepede Royg is confident and match hardened having come through the qualifying draw. Can Cepede Royg cause a big upset?

There are more expectations on Ash Barty than ever before heading into the Australian summer. Barty enters the 2018 Australian summer as the top ranked Australian having ended 2017 in superb form. However, Barty started her 2018 season in a shocking manner. Barty was comfortably beaten in her opening match at the Brisbane International, defeated 6-3 6-2 by Lesia Tsurenko. Barty looked uncoordinated and rusty in her opening defeat in Brisbane, Barty will be keen to recapture her 2017 form in Sydney before heading down to Melbourne.

Veronica Cepede Royg did well to get through a tough qualifying draw in Sydney. Cepede Royg won 3 matches in the qualifying draw, 3 wins over decent opponents: Maria Sakkari, Kateryna Bondarenko and Lara Arruabarrena. The 25-year-old will enter the main draw with nothing to lose and a lot to gain, a dangerous formula for opponents early in the tournament.

Karolina Pliskova vs Veronica Cepede-Royg, Roland Garros R4 Preview

Roland Garros, 🇫🇷 R4 Preview + Prediction
(2) 🇨🇿 Karolina Pliskova vs 🇵🇾 Veronica Cepede-Royg

A huge opportunity presents itself to Karolina Pliskova on Monday as she aims to reach the quarter-final stage at Roland Garros for the first time. The second seed in Paris had low expectations heading into the event given her struggles on clay, all of a sudden Pliskova is a strong favourite to reach the quarter-final stage and from there anything could happen. Pliskova meets Veronica Cepede-Royg at the fourth round stage on Monday, a big chance for Pliskova but also for Cepede-Royg given she is far more comfortable on a clay court.
