U.S Open R1: (1) Serena Williams vs Vitalia Diatchenko
Serena Williams’ quest for a Calendar Slam begins with a first round clash against the unheralded Vitalia Diatchenko. The three-time defending champion is the overwhelming favourite to win her 22nd Grand Slam and her 7th U.S Open title.
Serena’s preparation for the U.S Open started with a minor setback, forced to withdraw from the Bank of West Classic with a wrist injury. The world number 1 then suffered her second loss of the year at the semi-final stage in Toronto, defeated by Belinda Bencic in a shock loss. Serena finally got going in Cincinnati, where she defeated Ivanovic, Svitolina and Halep on route to the title.
Vitalia Diatchenko will be making just her second main draw appearance at the U.S Open. The Russian has only picked up one Grand Slam main draw victory in her career and has just 2 main draw victories to her name in 2015. There is very little to suggest Diatchenko will be remotely competitive against Serena.
This will be the first career meeting between Williams and Diatchenko. This is clearly a David vs Goliath situation, a massive mismatch. Serena often needs a few matches to find her rhythm in a Grand Slam, this will be a nice little warm-up for the world number 1 as she looks to create history over the next fortnight in New York.
