CSN Ends Tomljanovic’s Run

Carla Suarez Navarro has defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3 6-3 to reach her fourth career Grand Slam quarterfinal where she will face Eugenie Bouchard. Suarez Navarro was able to dictate play for much of the match, pushing Tomljanovic behind the baseline.

Suarez Navarro obtained an early break of serve and was able to maintain the lead for the entire set. Tomljanovic struggling to find a way to hit through CSN. At 3-5 Tomljanovic served to stay in the set but quickly found herself down 0-40. The Croatian was able to save the first two set points but would ultimately succumb, Carla taking the set 6-3.

Tomljanovic made a promising start to the second set, breaking serve in the first game of the set. However Suarez Navarro would hit back, winning four consecutive games to take a commanding 4-1 lead in the second set. At this stage in that match it seemed like Suarez Navarro would cruise to victory but there was some strong late resistance from the Croatian. Tomljanovic looked to be more aggressive towards the end of the set, she held for 2-4 before bringing up a break point in the next game. The world number 72 was unable to convert, CSN holding for a 5-2 lead.

Suarez Navarro would have her chance to serve for the match at 5-3. Once again Tomljanovic would press hard, bringing up two break points, however she was once again unable to convert her chances. Tomljanovic saved the first match point she faced, finishing off a long rally with a big forehand winner down the line. However Suarez Navarro clinched the victory on her second match point, a solid victory for the Spaniard.
