Ekaterina Makarova vs Lesia Tsurenko, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, 🇫🇷🐌 R2 Preview + Prediction
🇷🇺 Ekaterina Makarova vs 🇺🇦 Lesia Tsurenko

Ekaterina Makarova became the first woman to eliminate a top seed from the Roland Garros draw in the opening round of the tournament when she cruised past Angelique Kerber in straight sets on day one of the tournament. Makarova will have gained a great deal of confidence from that win and will need to be on her game as she enters a reasonably tough second round clash against Lesia Tsurenko on Wednesday in Paris.

Makarova produced an exceptional performance in the first round to storm past Angelique Kerber 6-2 6-2. The Russian was bold under pressure and was particularly effective when break point down, saving 14 of 16 break points throughout the match. Clay has never been Makarova’s best surface but she is certainly capable, now that she has assumed the position of the number 1 seed she could do some damage in a wide open field.

Lesia Tsurenko won her first ever main draw match at Roland Garros on Sunday, a comfortable win over in-from compatriot Kateryna Kozlova, 6-4 6-0. Tsurenko has shown flashes of what she is capable of in 2017, most notably in Acapulco where she won the title, the important thing for Lesia is to translate her potential into results at the Grand Slam level, something she has rarely been able to do.

Ekaterina Makarova has won both of the previous matches between the pair. Both of those wins came on a hard court, most recently a 3-6 6-4 6-3 win in Miami last year.

I’m going to give Makarova the edge here. I think this is a good match-up for Makarova because she does most things slightly better than Tsurenko. Makarova likes to dictate and she should be able to do that enough in this contest to control the match given her superior firepower from the baseline, there may be a let-down at times but Makarova should pull through.

Prediction: Ekaterina Makarova to defeat Lesia Tsurenko in 3 sets
