(17) Elina Svitolina vs Casey Dellacqua
Elina Svitolina and Casey Dellacqua will go head to head for the first time on Thursday where they will be do battle for a spot in the third round at SW19.
Elina Svitolina continues to fly under the radar, climbing to a career high ranking of 17 in the world after reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros last month.
Svitolina’s preparation for Wimbledon wasn’t ideal, losing in the first round at Eastbourne to Heather Watson. The Ukrainian looked rusty in her opening round match on Tuesday, coming from a set down to defeat Misaki Doi 3-6 6-3 6-2 to reach the second round at Wimbledon for the first time. Grass isn’t Elina’s greatest surface, she likes to play from well behind the baseline and doesn’t have the greatest serve.
Casey Dellacqua is much more comfortable on the grass. The Australian enjoys the quicker conditions and rolled through her opening round match against former quarter-finalist Tamira Paszek. Dellacqua cruised to a 6-2 6-2 victory.
Casey will be very comfortable with the hotter than usual conditions in London. Casey loves the heat, having grown up in Perth, she will feel very comfortable with the London heat. Dellacqua’s form hasn’t been great in 2015, but she remains a dangerous opponent: especially on grass, and especially in these hot conditions.
This will be the first career meeting between Elina and Casey and it promises to be a very close match. There is little to separate these two, especially on a grass court. On any other surface, Elina would be the clear favourite.
Nevertheless, I still think Svitolina will have the edge in this one. The Ukrainian has won so many more matches this year and that counts for a lot. Overall, she’s just a little bit more solid in all the important areas and has a greater desire to win. Elina should find a way to come through this one.
Prediction: Elina Svitolina to defeat Casey Dellacqua in 3 sets
