(5) Eugenie Bouchard vs (7) Ana Ivanovic
In Wednesday’s second match at the 2014 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SCglobal, Eugenie Bouchard will face Ana Ivanovic in what is highly likely to be a virtual sudden death match. Both Genie and Ana suffered first up defeats in their opening group stage matches in Singapore and both will be looking to rebound strongly with a victory to keep their hopes of progressing through to the semi-finals alive.
Eugenie Bouchard struggled in her WTA Finals debut against Simona Halep on Monday. Genie was comprehensively outplayed, going down 2-6 3-6. Bouchard never really got into the match, hitting a whopping 30 unforced errors compared to just 13 winners. Bouchard was unable to contain her aggression and hit past a solid Simona Halep. Genie will need to dramatically improve if she is to keep her WTA Finals campaign alive, she will come into this match with some confidence having never lost to Ana Ivanovic.
Ana Ivanovic put up a decent fight against Serena Williams in the opening match of the 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore. Ivanovic had a massive opportunity to break in the ninth game of the opening set to serve for the opening set, however she missed a relatively straightforward forehand volley. Serena made her pay, breaking in the tenth game to take the opening set 6-4.
Ivanovic competed well in the second set, holding serve to love three games in a row whilst putting pressure on Serena’s serve. However just like In the opening set, Ana’s serve let her down when it mattered most. In the opening set Ana double faulted on set point and in the second set Ana hit three unforced errors when serving to stay in the match.
Genie has a perfect 2-0 record over Ana Ivanovic, however Ivanovic heads into this match as the favourite. Boucahrd stunned Ivanovic at the Australian Open earlier this year, coming from a set down to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final with a 5-7 7-5 6-2 victory. Genie's other victory over Ana came in the second round at Wimbledon last year, where she upset the Serb in straight sets 6-3 6-3.
It’s extremely hard to predict a winner in this match, Bouchard will need to improve dramatically if she is to prevail here and I think she will. Genie has shown all year that she thrives on the biggest stages and loves a challenge; she also seems to match up well against Ivanovic. Conversely, Ana has not performed well at the big events this year.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Ana Ivanovic in 3 sets
