Eugenie Bouchard vs Svetlana Kuznetsova Preview & Prediction – W&S Open Second Round

(7) Eugenie Bouchard vs Svetlana Kuznetsova

In one of Wednesday’s most intriguing matches, rising star Eugenie Boucahrd takes on veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round on the Western & Southern Open.

Eugenie comes into this match on the back of her most disappointing loss of the season. There was so much hype around Genie’s first home tournament as a top 10 player. However Genie was unable to live up to expectations, bowing out in her opening match to qualifier Shelby Rogers. Genie admitted after the match she was unable to deal with the difficult circumstances surrounding the match (her first match since Wimbledon coupled with a full crowd expecting her to perform well). The Canadian will be desperate to bounce back this week in Cincinnati, starting with a victory over Kuznetsova on Wednesday.

In Washington D.C Svetlana Kuznetsova broke a four-year titles drought, defeating Kurumi Nara in a tight three setter in the final. However Svetlana too suffered a first up exit in Montréal, losing via retirement to Madison Keys. Svetlana made a positive start in Cincinnati, defeating Camila Giorgi in three sets.

These two have only met on one previous occasion, Svetlana cruised past Bouchard 6-4 6-1 in Oeiras earlier this season (on clay). Bouchard uncharacteristically seemed to check out during the second set. I suspect the result on Wednesday will be very different. Genie will be determined to do well this week and the conditions in Cincinnati should suit her. Genie is the ultimate competitor and I can’t see her losing two matches in a row (two matches that she should be winning).

Prediction: (7) Eugenie Boucahrd to defeat Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets
