Garbine Muguruza vs Svetlana Kuznetsova, Cincinnati QF Preview

Western & Southern Open, 🇺🇸🌉 Cincinnati QF Preview + Prediction
(4) 🇪🇸 Garbine Muguruza vs (8) 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova

Garbine Muguruza and Svetlana Kuznetsova will go head-to-head for the third time in 2017 when they meet at the quarter-final stage of the Western & Southern Open on Friday. Kuznetsova will be hoping it is third time lucky against Muguruza this year as it was the Spaniard who won their two previous matches this year. Muguruza enters this quarter-final clash on a high after saving match points to defeat Madison Keys for the first time in four attempts. Kuznetsova is also playing good tennis this week and will be eager to win this match given her recent disappointments against Muguruza. Recent form suggests it is Muguruza that will continue her recent dominance of Kuznetsova.

Garbine Muguruza has been impressively consistent throughout the opening weeks of the U.S Open series after her triumph at Wimbledon. Muguruza has now reached at least the quarter-final stage of all three events during the North American swing. The fourth seed started her Cincinnati campaign with a comfortable 6-2 6-0 win over Beatriz Maia Haddad before saving three match points on route to an epic 6-4 3-6 7-6 victory over Madison Keys. Muguruza’s win over Keys was significant given the Spaniard had lost all three of their previous matches.

The head-to-head record will be on Muguruza’s side on Friday. Muguruza holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Kuznetsova and has won their last four encounters, on four different surfaces. Most recently Muguruza won 6-3 6-4 on route to the title at Wimbledon.

Svetlana Kuznetsova has cruised through to the quarter-finals in Cincinnati. The Russian started her Western & southern Open campaign with an easy 6-3 6-4 win over Yulia Putintseva before cruising past Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-4. Kuznetsova’s form has dropped off towards the second half of the season, a win over Muguruza would be just what Kuznetsova needs to reignite her season.

All signs point to a Muguruza win here. Muguruza has been dominant over Kuznetsova, importantly she has been able to win on every surface, highlighting that this is a good match-up for Muguruza no matter what. Muguruza’s consistent aggression is too much for Kuznetsova to handle and it is Muguruza who comes into this match with the greater form and much greater confidence given her recent success.

  1. Wtaddict, why will Halep beat Konta in 2 sets? Please give your detailed reasoning. Is konta injured?

I think the other way can happen. But the most possible result will be either winning in 3 sets going by the 2 past H2H matches both of which went to 3 sets. Konta won the recent match on Grass also in 3. So, this has a 3 setter written all over it. So, I am going with the over.

      • wtaaddictcom, thnx for your reply with your logic. Yes, you are right, Halep is the better player if she plays focussed and motivated. But, Konta is a fighter with powerful service and shots. So, it should be a close fight. But so far Halep is leading the 1st set 5-2.

        • Halep was actually in control of all their matches and could have won in straight sets on each occasion. Not just about the end result. Plus grass is completely different

          • This is not a good explanation.
Halep did not win the matches which you are talking about – end of the story.
And why should their grass match seen different then their other meetings?

Anyway, imo it’s an even Match up.
