🇬🇧 Wimbledon, R4 Preview
🇮🇹 Camila Giorgi vs. 🇷🇺 Ekaterina Makarova
An interesting round of 16 clash at Wimbledon sees Camila Giorgi and Ekaterina Makarova go head-to-head for the first time. The draw has opened up nicely for these two who both claimed victory over seeded opposition on route to the this stage. This is a big opportunity for both, both are playing well and will see this as a very winnable match.
Camila Giorgi is into the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time since the US Open in 2013. Giorgi has long been one of the tour’s biggest wasted talents, perhaps this is where she makes her big move? The Italian started the event with a topsy-turvy 3 set victory over 21st seeded Anastasija Sevastova. Giorgi went on to defeat Madison Brengle in 2 sets before saving match point on route to a 3-6 7-6 6-2 victory against Katerina Siniakova.
Ekaterina Makarova has made it through to the second week at Wimbledon for the third time and is 1 win away from emulating her previous best result in 2014. Makarova stared her campaign with a 7-6 2-6 6-3 win over Petra Martic before claiming a dramatic 6-4 1-6 7-5 victory over the 2nd seeded Caroline Wozniacki. Makarova led Wozniacki 5-1 in the deciding set before squandering several match points as her lead was evaporated. At 5-5 Makarova played an outstanding game to hold and she went on to break serve in the next game to secure an outstanding win. Makarova backed up that win over Wozniacki with a 4-6 6-4 6-1 win over Lucie Safarova.
It will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out in the first career meeting between the pair.
