Julia Goerges vs. Anett Kontaveit, Zhuhai RR Preview

WTA Elite Trophy, Group Stage – Preview
🇩🇪 (5) Julia Goerges vs. 🇪🇪 (10) Anett Kontaveit

Julia Goerges begins her title defense in Zhuhai on Wednesday where she takes on Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit. Goerges reignited her career this time last year and is seemingly peaking at the later stage of the season once again having won the title in Luxembourg a few weeks ago. Conversely, Kontaveit was extremely poor in her first match of the week and may find it tough to respond here.

Julia Goerges arrives in Zhuhai full of confidence as she looks to defend her title. 12 months ago, Goerges arrived in Zhuhai fresh from winning the title in Moscow, this year she arrives fresh from winning the title in Luxembourg. The German’s title run in Luxembourg was much needed because her form prior to that had been pretty poor. Goerges’ triumph in Zhuhai 12 months ago was the biggest title of her career, it will be interesting to see how she handles the pressure of the defending the title this week.

Anett Kontaveit made a very lackluster start to her Zhuhai campaign, she was thrashed by Elise Mertens 3-6 1-6. Kontaveit was extremely impatient, hitting far too many unforced errors from the baseline. Kontaveit’s first-up horror show in Zhuhai means she is basically eliminated from the tournament. Kontaveit will need to drastically raise her level if she is to even be competitive against the defending champion.

The only previous match between the pair took place in Budapest last year, Goerges won 6-7 6-3 6-4.
