Magdalena Rybarikova vs (2) Petra Kvitova
Excitement is building with the US Open just around the corner. However on Saturday the focus will be on the Connecticut Open final where former champion Petra Kvitova takes on this weeks surprise package Magdalena Rybarikova.
Kvitova has raced through all three of her matches in New Haven this week. Petra overcame a slow start in her opening two matches to bolt to the finish line in straight set victories over Ekaterina Makarova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Petra has been a fantastic frontrunner this week; once she’s ahead there has been no stopping her the Wimbledon champion Petra booked her place in her third consecutive Connecticut Open final with a comprehensive 6-3 6-1 dismantling of Sam Stosur. Petra hit 11 aces and 26 winners compared to just 15 unforced errors. Stosur really struggled to read Kvitova’s serve, Petra mixed things up nicely and kept the Aussie guessing.
Magdalena Rybarikova reached her first ever premier level final with an impressive 6-2 6-4 victory over Camila Giorgi in Friday’s first semi-final. Rybarikova managed to go through the whole match without dropping a service game, despite facing 11 break points throughout the match. The Slovakian hit 20 winners compared to just 9 unforced errors in a really tidy performance. Rybarikova’s ability to stay composed and stick to her plan was impressive. Rybarikova’s most impressive victory this week came in the second round where she upset defending champion Simona Halep in three sets. This has been an incredible week for the Slovakian, heading into this event Rybarikova had lost 7 of her last 8 matches.
Saturday’s final will be the first tour level meeting between Kvitova and Rybarikova. The way Kvitova has been playing this week she will come into this match as the strong favourite. If Kvitova plays like she did against Stosur on Friday she will cruise through this match in straight sets. However you never quite know which Petra is going to show up, despite how well she has played this week. Rybarikova will present a different challenge, the fact that these haven’t played each other for a while will also make this a bit tricky for Petra. The final will be played during the day, the forecasted humid conditions are not ideal for Petra who’s asthma often troubles her during the North American swing. Rybarikova has nothing to lose in this match and I wouldn't be too surprised to see an upset here. This should be an entertaining final….
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Magdalena Rybarikova in three sets
