(3) Petra Kvitova vs Roberta Vinci
In Friday’s first Quarter-final Petra Kvitova will take on a resurgent Roberta Vinci for a spot in the semi-finals at the China Open. After winning the inaugural Wuhan Open, Petra is one of the form players heading into the upcoming WTA Finals in Singapore, if she can win the title in Beijing she may well head into Singapore as the favourite.
Petra has only played one match in Beijing yet she finds herself in the quarter-finals and a strong favourite to reach the semi-finals. The Czech received a bye into the second round where she comprehensively defeated Peng Shuai 6-4 6-2 to advance to the third round. Petra hit 22 winners to just seven unforced errors in what was a really impressive performance. Petra then reached the quarter-finals courtesy of a walkover, as Venus Williams was unfortunately forced to withdraw from their third round match.
Roberta Vinci has had an extremely disappointing season, her run to the quarter-finals this week in Beijing may well be the highlight of her season. Vinci’s biggest victory of the season came in the second round where she upset a lethargic Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-4, the Italians first top 10 victory of the season. Vinci backed up her victory over the Pole with another impressive upset victory, this time a 6-1 0-6 7-5 triumph over Ekaterina Makarova.
Interestingly, the head to head record between these two is slip at 2-2. Both of the Roberta Vinci’s victories were on clay in 2013 whilst Petra won their most recent encounter 6-3 7-5 in a Fed Cup tie earlier this year on a hard court. Kvitova will certainly be the fresher of the two heading into this match, having only played one match this in Beijing. Petra is in great form at the moment, If she plays reasonably well, it’s hard to see Vinci challenging her.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Roberta Vinci in 2 sets
