BNP Paribas Open, 🇺🇸🌴 Indian Wells R1 Preview
🇰🇿 Yulia Putintseva vs 🇧🇪 Alison Van Uytvanck
An interesting opening round clash in the Californian desert sees Yulia Putintseva take on Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck. Putintseva and Van Uytvanck have vastly contrasting styles and both have had contrasting results of late. Van Uytvanck arrives in Indian Wells full of confidence after winning the title in Budapest a few weeks ago whilst Putintseva has generally struggled in 2018. Nevertheless, it is Putintseva who has won both of the previous matches between the pair.
Putintseva has steadily dropped down the rankings in recent times, there have been little signs of improvement for Putintseva since her stunning run to the Roland Garros quarter-finals in 2016. Putintseva has had some disappointing losses in 2018, most notably a 3 set loss to Ana Bogdan at the Australian Open, a match she led by a set and a break. Most recently, Putintseva was thrashed by Marketa Voundrosova in the opening round in Doha. The good news for Putintseva is that the Indian Wells surface suits the Kazakh’s game nicely, she will be hopeful that she can turn her fortunes around at the BNP Paribas Open.
Alison Van Uytvanck will be making her first appearance since claiming her second career title in Budapest a few weeks ago. It was an amazing week for Van Uytvanck who stormed into the final without dropping a set. Van Uytvanck overcome quality opposition in the final, navigating her way past Dominika Cibulkova in a tight three set match, the biggest win of the Belgian’s career. It will be interesting to see if Van Uytvanck bring her good form to Indian Wells.
Putintseva has won both of the previous matches between the pair, both were on clay, both were comfortable straight set wins for Putintseva, dropping a combined 4 games across those two matches. Most recently Putintseva won 6-2 6-1 at an ITF event in 2015. Can an in form Van Uytvanck turn those results around?
