(8) Angelique Kerber vs. (18) Eugenie Bouchard
On paper this match shapes as the pick of the fourth round matches on the women’s side for day 8.
Both ladies have quietly progressed into the second week in Paris. Kerber is yet to drop a set whilst Goerges pushed Bouchard to three sets in the second round.
Bouchard is on an eight match winning streak, having won her first ever WTA title in Nurmberg in the week leading up to Roland Garros. Bouchard is certainly the more in from player out of the two, however in saying that Kerber is a step up in opposition compared to all eight of her previous opponents.
Kerber came to Paris struggling but seems to be getting better and better with each match. Kerber impressed me in her victory over Hantuchova; she won some stunning rallies throughout the match. Kerber could be peaking just at the right time.
These two have played each other on one previous occasion, at last years U.S Open. It was Kerber who won that match in three sets. This is a very different match, it is Bouchard who is the slight favourite coming into this match on the back of her recent form. However I think Kerber is gaining confidence and will tough out a victory here.
Angelique Kerber to defeat Eugenie Bouchard 7-5 4-6 6-2
(7) Maria Sharapova vs. (19) Samantha Stosur
Maria Sharapova has become the favourite to claim the title in Paris ever since Williams and Li Na exited early. This is by far Sharapova’s biggest test in her quest to win her second Roland Garros title. Sam Stosur is in great form and full of confidence, an upset could be on the cards here.
Both ladies have been mostly untroubled in their opening three matches in Paris. Stosur was tested by Cibulkova but once again was able to defeat Slovakian in straight sets. Sharapova put on a clinic in a 6-0 6-0 drubbing of Ormaechea in third round.
Sharapova has a dominant head to head record against Stosur, having won 13 of their 15 encounters. The last three matches between the two have all been straight set victories to Maria. Their most recent match was a few weeks ago in Madrid; it was a very competitive match but it had a familiar score line with Sharapova winning in straight sets. If Stosur could choose where she would like to play Sharapova, Roland Garros would be right up there. They have only played each other once a true clay court, at the 2011 Rome final.
The pressure is all on Sharapova in this match, she is now expected to win the title or at least make the final. If Stosur can maintain a high level of play, she can push Maria all the way in this match and an upset is a very real possibility.
Prediction: Maria Sharapova to defeat Sam Stosur 6-2 4-6 6-3
