Sabine Lisicki vs Carla Suarez Navarro
Sabine Lisicki will be looking for her first victory of season 2015 when she takes on Carla Suarez Navarro at the Apia Sydney International. This should be another fascinating first round match in Sydney between two players possessing contrasting games.
Sabine Lisicki looked to be on track to make a flying start to her 2015 campaign when she blitzed Yaroslava Shvedova 6-0 in the opening set of their first round match in Brisbane. However Sabine was unable to sustain such a high level of play, eventually losing in three sets 6-0 5-7 4-6. Sabine must win this match, she can not afford to head to Melbourne with zero wins under her belt. Sabine did however win the doubles event in Brisbane alongside Martina Hingis.
Carla Suarez Navarro had a much better time in Brisbane. The Spaniard battled hard through her opening two matches, coming from a set down to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova and Lucic-Baroni. In the Quarter-finals Carla was no match for a red-hot Maria Sharapova, slumping to a 1-6 3-6 defeat.
Interestingly these two have only met on one previous occasion, all the back in 2012 at the Rogers Cup. It was Carla Suarez Navarro who prevailed in a tight three set encounter.
This match will feature a lot of entertaining rallies, with both ladies capable of coming up with outrageous shots. I suspect Sabine will get the job done in this encounter, she should have shaken off any preseason rustiness during her doubles title run in Brisbane. Sabine's ability to win more free points will be the difference.
Prediction: Sabine Lisicki to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets
