Sam Stosur vs Petra Kvitova Preview – New Haven Semi-Final

Semi-Final #2 – (WC) Samantha Stosur vs (2) Petra Kvitova

The match of the tournament in Connecticut will take place on Friday evening when Sam Stosur and Petra Kvitova come up against each other for a spot in the final. Both Sam and Petra have had great weeks so far in New Haven, which should result in a close, high quality match between the pair.

Sam Stosur has been serving exceptionally well in last couple of matches. The Australian routed Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-2 without conceding a single service break. Stosur was forced to work much harder for her quarter-final victory over Kirsten Flipkens. The former U.S Open champion cruised through the opening set but faltered at 4-5 when serving to stay in the second set. Stosur quickly put the second set disappointment behind her, grabbing a crucial break midway through the final set. Flipkens only managed the one break of serve all night, Stosur will need to continue to serve well if she is to upset Petra Kvitova on Friday evening.

After a disappointing couple of weeks in Montreal and Cincinnati, Kvitova has turned things around in New Haven. The Wimbledon champion smashed Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-1 in her opening match, winning 12 of the last 13 games. The Czech carried that momentum into her quarter-final match with compatriot Zahlavova Strycova. Kvitova again conceded an early break before bolting to the finish line. Petra won 9 of the last 10 games to win 6-4 6-1.

Petra has a convincing 5-1 head-to-head record over Sam Stosur. Petra has won all four of their previous meeting on hard courts. Stosur usually plays some of her best tennis at this time of the year, the same can’t really be said about Petra. I think Sam has more to gain on Friday; she will be up for the challenge and come through this match in three sets.

Prediction: Sam Stosur to defeat Petra Kvitova in three sets
