Sara Errani vs Caroline Wozniacki Preview – US Open Quarter-Final

(13) Sara Errani vs (10) Caroline Wozniacki

Tuesday’s final match on Arthur Ashe Stadium sees Sara Errani take on Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the semi-finals in what promises to be a grueling battle. Errani and Wozniacki are both famous for their consistency and defensive skills, therefore it will be interesting to see who can step up and be a little more aggressive in this match. One thing is for sure; there will be a number of long rallies between two players desperate to return to the semi-final stage of a Grand Slam.

Sara Errani has had some impressive victories in New York over the past week. The Italian has defeated three big hitters in a row, the types of players that have really troubled Errani in the past. Errani’s third round victory over Venus Williams was particularly impressive. The Italian was more aggressive than usual, particularly in the final set where she hit 9 winners including some stunning shots in the all important tiebreaker. In the fourth round, Errani did what she had to do against Lucic-Baroni; her consistency was too much for the qualifier to handle. Baroni clearly fatigued as the match went on and was unable to compete with Errani in the third set.

Caroline Wozniacki’s 6-4 2-6 6-2 victory over Maria Sharapova in the fourth round was one of the Danes biggest victories over the past few years. Wozniacki showed she is capable of dictating play, stepping inside the court and being more aggressive. Wozniacki served really well once again, her average first serve speed was actually higher than Maria’s and she only hit 2 double faults compared to 8 from Maria. Caroline’s superior serve could be the difference on Tuesday against Errani.

Caroline has a 2-1 head to head record over Errani, however the two haven’t played each other since 2010. Wozniacki won that match 6-4 6-2 in Beijing. Caroline Wozniacki is the heavy favourite heading into this match but suspect it will be much closer than many are predicting. I am still confident Wozniacki will win however I wouldn't be surprised to see this one go to three sets. Both are consistent and terrific retrievers, however Wozniacki’s ability to be more aggressive and her superior serve gives her the edge.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Sara Errani in 2 sets
