Sara Errani vs Garbine Muguruza Preview – New Haven First Round

(7) Sara Errani vs Garbine Muguruza

Sara Errani and Garbine Muguruza will open Grandstand Court proceedings on Monday afternoon at the Connecticut Open in New Haven. With the U.S Open just around the corner, both ladies will be desperate to avoid a first round loss given both have lost three of their last four matches heading into New Haven.

Sabine Lisicki has cut Sara Errani’s first two tournaments during the U.S Open series short. Errani fell to Lisicki in straight sets in her opening match in Montreal but was much more competitive in their second round encounter in Cincinnati. Lisicki eventually prevailed in a third set tiebreaker. Errani keeps drawing drawing big hitters first up, she will be desperate for victory on Monday.

Muguruza has also had a somewhat disappointing U.S Open series to date. The Spaniard’s biggest victory came in the opening round at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford where she defeated defending champion Dominika Cibulkova in three sets. Garbine suffered a shock first round loss to Annika Beck in Cincinnati last week.

Sara Errani defeated Garbine Muguruza in their only previous encounter, which was back in 2012, a three set victory in the first round of the U.S Open. Although Errani suffered two consecutive loses to Lisicki, her performances in Cincinnati were certainly something she can build on. I think Sara will have a decent run in New Haven starting with a victory over Muguruza on Monday.

Prediction: Sara Errani to defeat Garbine Muguruza in three sets
