Serena Williams will be looking to make history on Sunday evening where she will be vying for her 18th Grand Slam title alongside two greats of the game, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Her opponent, Caroline Wozniacki will be gunning for an elusive maiden Grand Slam title. A fitting end to the North American hard court season, Williams and Wozniacki have been the two form players over the past month, this promises to be an entertaining battle.

Serena Williams continued her stunning form in New York with a 6-1 6-3 demolition of Ekaterina Makarova in exactly one hour in Friday’s second semi-final. Serena is yet to drop a set at this years US Open and has not conceded more than 3 games in a single set. Serena was in unplayable form for the majority of her semi-final match, the world number 1 was extremely aggressive and super focused. A part from a few nervy moments finishing off the match, Serena played impeccably well, giving Makarova no chance to attack. Can Caroline Wozniacki compete with Serena when she is in this kind of form?

 

Wozniacki heads into her second Grand Slam final full of confidence, the Dane has had some great results over the past fortnight including impressive victories over Sharapova, Errani and Petkovic. Wozniacki’s 7-6 4-3 semi-final victory via retirement over Peng Shuai was not the way the Dane would have liked to reach the final, however Wozniacki’s first set comeback with impressive. Wozniacki twice found herself a break down; Peng Shuai served for the set at 6-5 but was unable to finish Wozniacki off. The former world number 1 dominated the tiebreak, taking it 7-1. Wozniacki didn't serve as well as she would have liked to, she will need to serve much better in the final if she is to have any chance of causing an upset.

 

Serena Williams has a commanding 8-1 head to head record over Wozniacki, However their two most recent matches will give Wozniacki confidence that she can cause on upset in Sunday’s final. In Montréal and Cincinnati, Serena was forced to come from a set down to defeat Wozniacki, both matches featured a tight third set which could have gone either way. Serena is certainly the more experienced and often saves her best tennis for Grand Slam finals, she seems to deal with the difficult conditions in New York far better than anyone else. When Serena is playing this well she is unbeatable, her level will need to drop if Wozniacki is to have any chance. If Serena does play a nervy match, Wozniacki is the type of player that will capitalise and Serena will know this.
