(1) Serena Williams vs (15) Lucie Safarova
Serena Williams opened her title defence at the Rogers Cup with a comprehensive 6-0 6-2 victory over Sam Stosur on Wednesday evening, setting up a third round clash with 15th Seed Lucie Safarova. Serena raced through the opening set in just 18 minutes, hitting 11 winners to just 3 unforced errors. After a short rain delay early in the second set, Serena continued to dominate. The world number 1 was never really challenged, especially in her service games and ran away with the second set 6-2. Lucie Safarova advanced through to the third round with a solid 6-4 6-2 victory over Magdalena Rybarikova, she will need to raise her level significantly if she is to overcome a terrible head to head record against the world number 1.
Serena has a 7-0 record against Lucie; the Czech has managed to push the world number 1 to three sets on three occasions. Serena served particularly well against Stosur and never really allowed the Australian to get into the match. Serena seems to be in the zone at the moment, when she is in the zone she is almost impossible to defeat. Serena should come through this match in straight sets.
Prediction: Serena Williams to defeat Lucie Safarova in straight sets
