(1) Serena Williams vs (4) Simona Halep
Serena Williams will have tan opportunity to avenge her embarrassing defeat to Simona Halep just days ago, when the two meet in the final of 2014 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SCglobal. We can expect Serena to come out firing on Sunday evening; it will be interesting to see how Simona handles the pressure, can she do it again?!
Serena Williams advanced to the final courtesy of an extremely hard-fought victory over close friend Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki completely outplayed Serena in the opening set but a determined Williams fought back to claim a 2-6 6-3 7-6 victory. After really struggling in the opening set, Serena played unbelievably well in the second set, hitting 15 winners to just 6 unforced errors.
The third set was one of the best sets of the season, both ladies played at an extremely high level. Ultimately it was Serena’s first serve and her determination to win that got her over the line. Wozniacki served for the match at 5-4 but Serena produced a stunning return game to keep her Singapore campaign alive. Wozniacki would then find herself serving to stay in the match at 5-6, the Dane saved one match point on route to sending the set to a tiebreaker.
Down 1-4 in the tiebreaker, Serena seemed to be heading for a defeat. However a lucky net cord saved the world number 1, changing the momentum of the match. Serena blew two match points at 6-4 in the tiebreaker but steadied to complete a gutsy victory. Serena ended the match with an impressive 51 winners compared to 40 unforced errors.
Simona Halep’s pathway to the final was far more straightforward. The Romanian cruised past a hapless Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-2 in little over an hour. Simona played incredibly well, her defence was solid but her attack was breathtaking. Simona ended the match with 26 winners to just 13 unforced errors. Whilst a lackluster Radwanska managed just 4 winners to 9 unforced errors.
Simona now has the opportunity to claim the biggest title of her career. Halep will bring a lot of confidence into this match having destroyed Serena 6-0 6-2 during the group stage. When Serena really challenged Simona in the second set of that match, the Romanian was able to handle the pressure. For me that’s a good sign and suggests that Simona is very capable of defeating Serena again here. Serena does have a 3-1 head-to-head lead over Simona, however that seems a little irrelevant.
My predictions have been horrible this week but hopefully I end on a high, I think Simona will prevail in a three set epic.
Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Serena Williams in 3 sets
