Sloane Stephens vs Andrea Petkovic Preview & Prediction – W&S Open First Round

Sloane Stephens and Andrea Petkovic will do battle in one of Tuesday’s most exciting matches at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Sloane Stephens has had a pretty poor couple of months and will be desperate to turn things around here in Cincinnati leading into the U.S Open.

In contrast, Andrea Petkovic has been in great form of late. The German won her second title of the season on clay in Bad Gastein before reaching the semi-finals at the Bank of the West Classic. Andrea defeated Venus in a seesawing quarter-final before falling to Serena in the semis. Unfortunately for Andrea, illness forced her to withdraw from Montreal last week.

Sloane has won just 2 of her past 7 matches, the American hasn't been able win consecutive matches since Birmingham. In Montreal last week, Sloane lost an extremely close three set match to Jelana Jankovic. Sloane seemed to be in a position to win the match on a couple of occasions but was unable to close out the match.

Sloane has won the last two matches between the two, both of which have featured tight third sets. Their meeting at Wimbledon last year was particularly epic, Sloane edged past Andrea 8-6 in a tense third set. Although Andrea has had good results of late, most of her positive results have been on clay. I think Sloane will extend her winning streak over Andrea to three matches on Tuesday. Sloane is due for a good week; she should be better suited to the conditions in Cincinnati.

  1. The only way Andrea Petkovic doesn’t win this in straight sets is if she has her eye on bigger and better things…like the US Open coming up. A condition that seems to repeat itself at Cincy as evident by the big names dropping so fast here. Nevertheless, having watched Andrea practice for the last several days, she is hitting the ball pure and moving well to the net (a noted weakness of hers.) Here serve is improving every week and with her improved confidence she is starting to hit the ball deep with more power. Factor all that in with what she has had to overcome the last several years with how hungry she is for every victory and I think you could very well see a double bagel here. Plus, SS is most likely thinking ahead to the US Open too. Either way the best match of the day and should have been put on Center Court.

    • I agree, Andrea is probably playing better tennis right now than she ever has.. Sloane needs a couple of wins here, she needs confidence leading into the U.S Open given her recent struggles. I believe this is her last tournament before the U.S Open so she really should be desperate to win. It will be a good match 🙂
