Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Yulia Putintseva, Cincinnati R2 Preview

Western & Southern Open, 🇺🇸🌉 Cincinnati R2 Preview + Prediction
(8) 🇷🇺 Svetlana Kuznetsova vs 🇰🇿 Yulia Putintseva

Svetlana Kuznetsova will begin her 2017 Western & Southern Open campaign on Wednesday with a second round encounter against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. As the 8th seed, Kuznetsova received a bye through to the second round in Cincinnati. The Russian will be keen to start the event strong as she looks to rebuild momentum after a disappointing first round loss at the Rogers Cup last week. Interestingly, Putintseva won the only previous match between the pair earlier this year at St. Petersburg.

Svetlana Kuznetsova has been one of the most consistent performers this season. However, Kuznetsova arrives in Cincinnati on the back of one of her worst results, Kuznetsova suffered her first opening round loss of the season last week where she was beaten by Catherine Bellis in straight sets at the Rogers Cup. Yulia Putintseva advanced to the second round in Cincinnati courtesy of a hard-fought 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over Veronica Cepede-Royg.

Putintseva claimed a 6-3 6-7 7-5 win over Kuznetsova in their only previous match at the quarter-final stage in St. Petersburg earlier this year. I suspect a determined Kuznetsova will get revenge here. Kuznetsova will remember her loss to Putintseva and will be keen to make amends given it was one of her worst losses of the year. Kuznetsova does most things better than Putintseva, in many way she is a stronger, more mature version of Putintseva. Kuznetsova should win this one.

Prediction: Svetlana Kuznetsova to defeat Yulia Putintseva in 2 sets

  1. I like the insight about the previous encounter fueling Kuznetsova for a redemption. In sports, motivation is such a big factor and many analyst don’t factor that in, they just simply pick the better team, or individual on paper without considering other critical components. They are human just like the rest of us. Now let’s see if Kuz can get going in this U.S Open season, after exiting round 1 at the hands of young star CC Bellis in Toronto.
