Venus Williams vs (6) Angelique Kerber
On Thursday evening, Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams will do battle for the fifth time, vying for a spot in the quarter-finals in Montréal. Coming off a solid week in Stanford where she reached the final before eventually succumbing to Serena Williams, Angie received a bye into the second round before comprehensively defeating Caroline Garcia in straight sets. Venus Williams came from a set down to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the opening round and proved too strong for qualifier Yulia Putintseva in the second round. Both ladies are in great form, probably season best form, which makes for an entertaining contest on Thursday evening in Montreal.
Angie has a 3-1 career record against Venus; the German has won three matches in a row against the former world number 1 (on three different surfaces). Their most recent encounter was at the 2012 U.S Open, Angie battled past Venus in three tight sets. Angie will force Venus to make more mistakes than she been in her previous few matches, the German is full of confidence at the moment and should be too good for Venus. Both ladies have played a lot of matches in relatively short period of time; Venus is certainly more likely to be compromised by this.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Venus Williams in straight sets
