(1) Serena Williams vs (23) Alize Cornet
World number 1 Serena Williams continues her quest for a sixth Wimbledon title when she comes up against 23rd seed Alize Cornet in the third round.
Serena Williams has been in ominous form in her opening two rounds, clearly she is on a mission, desperate to make a mends for her disappointing second round exit at Roland Garros. Williams has dropped just five games in her opening two matches, breezing past Tatishvili and Scheepers. In contrast, Alize Cornet has come through two tight matches to reach the third round. In the second round Cornet battled past Petra Cetkovska in three sets, Cornet was too strong in the important stages of the match and served surprisingly well.
Alize Cornet stunned Serena Williams the last time these two met earlier this year in Dubai. Serena played one of her worst games in recent years (some rumors circulated that she actually threw the match so her sister could win the title), but some credit has to go to Cornet who did play rather well that night. Serena has won their three prior meetings and will be looking to avenge her loss to Cornet in Dubai. Cornet will be a step up in opposition for Williams, her first test of the fortnight. Serena will know this and will step up her game, I expect Serena to absolutely dominate Cornet. Serena is just too powerful, it is hard to see her serve being broken in this match and at the same time it will be very difficult for Cornet to hold serve unless she keeps her first serve percentage up very high.
Prediction: Serena Williams to defeat Alize Cornet 6-2 6-1
(11) Ana Ivanovic vs (19) Sabine Lisicki
When the draw was released many of us quickly penciled in a potential third round clash between Lisicki and Ivanovic as something to look forward to. Both Lisicki and Ivanovic have steamrolled through their opening two matches to set the blockbuster clash.
Sabine Lisicki’s record at Wimbledon is outstanding; she seems to peak at this tournament each and every year even though her prior form is quite average. Ivanovic has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon and this will be a real test for the Serb. Ivanovic seems to have improved on grass; she is currently on a seven match winning streak on the back of winning her first grass court title in Birmingham. Both players therefore have confidence to draw upon heading into this match.
These two met for the first time a few months back in Stuttgart, Ivanovic smashed Lisicki 6-1 6-3 but of course clay is Ana’s favourite surface and is certainly Sabine’s worst surface. Sabine just loves playing on grass, especially at Wimbledon and I actually believe Lisicki will win this match. I think she will have more chances to break, the Serbs serve isn’t as reliable as Sabine’s (although it has improved). One thing is for sure; this will be a very entertaining match and should be very tight.
Prediction: Sabine Lisicki to defeat Ana Ivanovic 7-6 3-6 6-3
