WTA Eastbourne – Final Preview/Prediction

(5) Angelique Kerber vs Madison Keys

Eastbourne has exceeded all of my expectations, on each day there has been at least 1 superb, close three set match. On Friday it was Angelique Kerber who edged past Caroline Wozniacki in the match of the tournament thus far. Madison Keys on the other hand cruised through her semi-final match, bashing her way past local favourite Heather Watson. This sets up what should be a great final, both ladies are in form and will both be desperate to clinch the title.

On route to the final Kerber has had four impressive victories, in the second round she saved two match points to defeat Alize Cornet. The German then went on to thump Ekaterina Makarova in a clinical performance before edging past Wozniacki in another tight three set battle. Her opponent Madison Keys has been equally impressive, Keys outplayed Jankovic in her opening match before battling past defending champion Elena Vesnina. The American heads into her first WTA final full of confidence after dominating her two previous opponents.

The contrast in styles between these two makes for a fascinating final. The two have met twice before with Kerber emerging victorious on both occasions, both in straight sets and both on hard courts. If Madison Keys serves as well as she has been in her previous matches she will be very difficult to defeat. At the same time Kerber hasn't served particularly well and Keys will look to dominate the Germans second serve (which is more than capable of doing). Given this is the Americans first WTA final, nerves may be a factor. However Keys is usually very strong under pressure so I don't think nerves will be much on an issue. Fatigue could perhaps be a factor for the German, she has played some long, gruelling matches on route to the final. I think Keys will claim her first WTA title here.

Prediction: Madison Keys to defeat Angelique Kerber 6-3 7-5
