Victoria Azarenka vs (8) Caroline Wozniacki
The most anticipated second round match at Melbourne Park this year sees two time former champion: Victoria Azarenka take on former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki. A lot has been said and written about this brutal second round matchup, we can expect to see a fierce battle given all that is at stake.
Caroline Wozniacki made a reasonable start to her 2015 Australian campaign after an injury scare prematurely ended her stay in Sydney. Wozniacki just scraped through the opening set against Taylor Townsend, before running away with the match late in the second set, prevailing 7-6 6-2.
Caroline was widely tipped to be one of the main contenders in Melbourne however a brutal draw coupled with a dodgy wrist have seemingly lowered her chances. Wozniacki’s first big test will come on Thursday night, we will see if the Dane is truly a contender in Melbourne.
Vika notched up her first victory in 2015 with a comprehensive straight set 6-3 6-2 victory over Sloane Stephens. Vika was at her competitive best, playing the big points much better than Sloane.
Vika lurks as an extremely dangerous unseeded floater. If the Belarusian gets through this second round encounter, she is undoubtedly a legitimate chance to go deep into the draw and perhaps claim her third Australian Open crown?
The head to head between these two is tied at three all. The two have played (a completed match) just once since 2011. It was Victoria Azarenka who prevailed 6-3 7-6 in Cincinnati back in 2013.
I was impressed by how well Vika performed in her opening round win over Sloane. There is room for improvement, Vika will no doubt get better and better throughout the tournament. In a big match like this I have to pick Vika over Caroline, Vika has a habit of winning matches like this whilst the same can’t be said for Caroline.
Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in three sets
