Alize Cornet has battled her way past Petra Cetkovska 6-4 5-7 6-3 to reach the third round at SW19 where she will take on world number 1 Serena Williams.
It was Cetkovska who started the match off quite well. The Czech would break in the opening game of the match before consolidating her lead with a comfortable service hold. Cetkovska would maintain her lead for a couple of games, at 4-2 she was seemingly in control of the set. Cetkovska was the one being more aggressive, pushing Cornet way behind the baseline. Unfortunately for Petra she began to tighten up, Cornet seemed to sense her opponents vulnerability and stepped up her aggression. Some deep, aggressive service returns saw Cornet break to level the set at 4-4. Cornet eventually running away with the set 6-4.
Cornet's momentum continued into the second set where she would begin with a love service hold. Cetkovska would finally break Cornet's run of 5 straight games with a comfortable service hold of her own. Cetkovska began to be more aggressive once again, breaking Cornet before holding with her first ace of the match. Up 5-2, once again Petra would go into her shell and struggle to finish off the set. Cornet would win 3 straight games to level the set at 5-5. A lapse in concentration would see Cornet miss an easy put away, handing the Czech two break points, Cetkovska would break to give herself a chance to serve for the set for a third time. It was third time lucky for the Czech who finally managed to produce a decent service game when it mattered most.
The opening game of the third set was perhaps the most important game of the match. It was by far the longest game of the match, Cetkovska had her chances to break but Cornet managed to hold courtesy of some impressive first serves. Cetkovska did manage a tight service hold of her own in return but from here it was all Cornet. At 15-15 Cornet would take a tumble on the grass, in typical Cornet fashion she would respond with three straight points to hold for a 2-1 lead. Another loose game from Cetkovska would hand the break and ascendancy to Cornet. The Frenchwoman would hold to love to take total control of the match. At 5-3 Cornet would serve for the match. Cornet played a solid game whilst Cetkovska made error after error, continually selecting the wrong shot. A solid win for Cornet, but she will have to play the match of her life in the next round to get past Serena Williams.
