(13) Agnieszka Radwanska vs Ajla Tomljanovic
Aga Radwanska continues her quest for a maiden Grand Slam tite on Thursday where she comes up against Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round at SW19. Aga will be out to avenge her loss to Tomljanovic at Roland Garros last year.
Aga’s poor form in 2015 has been well documented, the Pole is trying to find a way to evolve her game to take her to the next level, however she has clearly been unsuccessful. Aga has shown some better signs over the past couple of weeks, reaching the final in Eastbourne and cruising through her opening round match at the All England Club.
Aga opened her 2015 Wimbledon campaign with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over Lucie Hradecka. The 2012 finalist played a very clean match, serving pretty well and hitting 12 winners and just 5 unforced errors. Aga will be weary of her second round opponent, Ajla Tomljanovic: who upset the Pole in the third round at Roland Garros in 2014.
Ajla Tomljanovic progressed to the second round at Wimbledon for the very first time in her career with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Klara Koukalova. Ajla blasted 25 winners past Koukalova, needing just a tick over an hour to set up a clash with Radwanska.
There is no doubt that Tomljanovic has the game to trouble Radwanska, Ajla has a booming serve and heavy groundstrokes. However, Ajla’s best results have come on clay, most notably, her upset victory over Radwanska at Roland Garros last year. I believe Ajla has the game to perform well on grass.
In the only previous encounter between the two, Ajla produced the match of her life to defeat Aga 6-4 6-4 in the third round at Garros in 2014. Ajla served extremely well in that match, what stood out though was her variety, Ajla hit a number of drop shots and mixed things up well, catching Aga off guard.
On grass, Aga should have the advantage. Aga is very experienced at Wimbledon and on this surface. However, Tomljanovic has nothing to lose and will be confident heading into this match, she knows that she has the game to blast Aga off the court. If Ajla can get into this match, she has a very good chance, given Aga’s recent lacklustre performances, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset here.
Prediction: Ajla Tomljanovic to defeat Aga Radwanska in 3 sets
