Agnieszka Radwanska vs Barbora Strycova, Sydney SF Preview

Apia International, Sydney ?? Semi-final #1 Preview
(2) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Barbora Strycova

Thursday’s first semi-final at the Apia International in Sydney features 2013 champion Agnieszka Radwanska and an in form Barbora Strycova. Radwanska has at times seemed rusty in the first couple of weeks of the season but finally seems to be hitting some form, whilst Barbora Strycova has been in great form this week but her ability to bounce back from a brutal quarter-final win over Caroline Wozniacki is very questionable. Also in the Pole’s favour is the commanding 6-0 head-to-head record she holds over Strycova.

As the second seed, Radwanska received a bye through the first round in Sydney. In the second round the Pole claimed a 7-6 6-1 win over Christina McHale before easing past Ying-Ying Duan 6-3 6-2. Aga’s convincing win over Duan was slightly encouraging given Duan pushed Aga all the way in a tight third set last week in Shenzhen. Aga is still getting used to her new Srixon racquet and certainly hasn’t been at her best in the first couple of weeks of the season. However, Aga’s amazing movement, improvisation and anticipation are still there, these characteristics are enough to see her past most opponents.

Barbora Strycova has been one of the form players on the tour in the first couple of weeks. Strycova made the quarter-finals in Auckland and is now into the final four in Sydney. Strycova secured her spot in the semi-finals with her most impressive win of the season, a 7-5 6-7 6-4 win over Caroline Wozniacki in a match that lasted well over three hours and was played in extreme heat. Strycova’s confidence in her game and ability to bounce back from disappointment has undoubtedly improved, this was clear when she squandered a big lead in the second set tiebreak against Wozniacki but managed to regain her form in the business end of the final set. Strycova has also claimed comfortable straight set wins over Ekaterina Makarova and Roberta Vinci this week.

Radwanska holds a 6-0 head-to-head record over Strycova. The first four of those matches were straight set wins but the pair met on two occasions in 2016 and both of those matches went the distance, including a 6-3 3-6 7-5 match in Tokyo late last year where Strycova had several chances to win that match.

Strycova’s form is probably the more impressive heading into this match. But Radwanska’s physical condition is likely to be far superior which is probably the more important factor. Strycova will have less than 24 hours to recover from a three hour plus marathon with Wozniacki in the brutal Sydney heat. Whilst Radwanska hasn’t played much tennis this week and will be fresh heading into this match. Going into a match against Radwanska on the back of such a marathon match isn’t a good combination. Radwanska will exploit Strycova’s deficiencies and should win quite comfortably.

  1. Well predicted but what should we expect in the final. Aga is playing really well now and so is Konta. I don’t see Konta getting nervous this time so it will all come down to who plays better. I favor Aga to win but it could be really close if Konta keeps her errors down. I hope Aga can attack the net often and keep up her aggressive ways. I think she needs to take this match cuz Konta is not going to give it to her. I predict Aga in straight sets.

    • Thanks, yes it will be an interesting final. It would take Konta’s very best to beat Aga. I would have to say Aga will win in straight sets, it’s not a good match-up for Konta
