Beijing R1: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska vs CoCo Vandeweghe
Agnieszka Radwanska and CoCo Vandeweghe will go head-to-head for the 3rd time in the last couple of months when the two meet in the 1st round at the China Open on Sunday. Radwanska has won all three of the previous matches between the pair quite comfortably in straight sets, CoCo Vandeweghe will be aiming to create a much more competitive match this time around.
Agnieszka Radwanska started her Asian campaign in the best possible manner, winning her first title of the year in Tokyo. Radwanska defeated 5 quality opponents on route to the title: Vandeweghe, Svitolina, Pliskova, Cibulkova and Bencic, all in straight sets. After a short turn around, the Pole couldn’t keep her winning form going in Wuhan, suffering a straight set loss to eventual champion Venus Williams. Radwanska is still right in contention to make her 5th consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals, Aga is currently in 12th place in the race to Singapore standings and will need to have a good week in Beijing to keep her chances of qualification alive.
CoCo Vandeweghe arrives in Beijing fresh off a decent run to the quarter-finals in Wuhan. Vandeweghe picked up victories over Tsurenko, Garcia and Strycova before being forced to retire with an injury during her quarter-final clash with Angelique Kerber. It has been an inconsistent year for Vandeweghe, she has an opportunity to end her season on a high with decent performance in Beijing.
Radwanska has a perfect 3-0 head-to-head record over Vandeweghe, All 3 victories have been in straight sets and all 3 victories have come on a hard court. Their most recent encounter took place a couple of weeks ago, Radwanska recorded a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory on route to the title in Tokyo. This is a good match-up for Aga, a tough one for Vandeweghe. Aga seems to really neutralize all of the American’s powerful weapons, the clever Pole is good at breaking the spirits of the American. With a spot in Singapore on the line, a motivated Radwanska should claim another comfortable win over the American on Sunday on a court that she has played well on in the past.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe in 2 sets
