Connecticut Open, ??? New Haven preview + prediction
SF #2: (1) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Daria Gavrilova

Friday’s second semi-final for the Connecticut Open in New Haven sees the top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska take on Daria Gavrilova. Radwanska has claimed a couple of tough straight set wins to reach the semi-final stage where she face what is likely to be her biggest challenge of the tournament thus far. Daria Gavrilova is on a roll, the Aussie is playing great tennis in New Haven and will be full of confidence heading into this big match. This will be the first career meeting between the pair in what should a very entertaining match-up between two unique types of players.

Agnieszka Radwanska began her title defense in New Haven with a solid 6-3 7-5 victory over a wayward Eugenie Bouchard. Radwanska produced an improved performance to defeat Shuai Peng 7-5 6-3 and advance to the semi-finals at the Connecticut Open. It has clearly been a disappointing year for Radwanska but there are signs that the Pole is finding form heading into the final Grand Slam of the year, defending her title in New Haven would be the perfect confidence boost for Radwanska before New York.

Daria Gavrilova has come past three dangerous opponents to reach the final four in New Haven. Gavrilova started the tournament with a tricky three set win over Kristyna Pliskova before beating Timea Babos 7-5 7-6. Gavrilova trailed Babos 2-6 in the second set tiebreak before winning 6 consecutive points to secure a straight set win. Gavrilova booked her spot in the semi-finals with an impressive 6-2 6-4 win over Kirsten Flipkens. Notably, Gavrilova saved all 11 break points she faced in her win over Flipkens.

This should be a highly competitive and entertaining match in what will be the first meeting between the pair. I’m going to go for the upset here, I think Gavrilova has what it takes to take down the defending champion. Gavrilova’s exceptional movement and defensive skills will make life tough for Radwanska. It is usually Radwanska who outlasts her opponents in rallies but on this occasion it will be Gavrilova, so long as the Aussie keeps her cool. Gavrilova has more power from the baseline and behind her serve and at this moment has better movement. The big question mark is Gavrilova’s mental capacity to do what she needs to here, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt as she has been playing well.

Prediction: Daria Gavrilova to defeat Agnieszka Radwanska in 3 sets

  1. Well written and I like the call here. This match could go either way, but I agree that Gavrilova is playing like this could be her time. Surprisingly these two have never faced each other.

    • Thank you! Yepp, it is surprising this will be the first match. I think there will be a lot of entertaining rallies… that’s for sure

  2. This match can go either way as both have their own advantages as wtaaddict has beautifully pointed out in her writeup.

Congrats is also due to wtaaddict for correctly predicting 3 of the 4 QF’s! If Pavlyuchenkova was consistent, all 4 QF’s would have won!

Congrats wtaaddict, you are on fire since R2!

Expecting this to be won by either in 3 hard sets or in 2 tight sets. Like the over here. I will take +3.5 Gavrilova also.

It will be a match between;-

Youth & inconsistency (Gavrilova) VS Experience & Consistency (Radwanska) + Motivation to retail her Title to further motivate her to run deep @USO

I lean on the experience of Radwanska to win today. If Gavri is very inconsistent in the 1st set, Radwanska will sweep Gavri in 2 as Gavri will be throwing tantrums like Nick Kyrgios and lose her head.

    • Thank you jaya!!

I think Gavrilova will feel like she has little to lose here so she will not be likely to get as frustrated as in a match she expects to win.

  3. Gavri is a great player to support if you like thrills and suffering heart attacks/pummelling cushions on the sofa. For the sake of my mental health, I’m rooting for both as a neutral. I think Radwanska’s confidence and intelligence should weather the storms given that Gavri is not quite the fully developed player I hope she becomes.

    • It’s true that Gavrilova is still very inconsistent. But her maturity has improved and she has beaten many top players over the years

  4. As usual Gavrilova will collapse and lose the match. Please do not forget Wtaaddict is famous with his emotional prediction in some occasions especially Gavrilova is An Aussie now.

    • Excuse me? If it was an emotional prediction it would be for Radwanska. I have no affiliation with Gavrilova

  5. Congratulations wtaaddict on another couple of fantastic SF predictions.

Cibulkova was an easy great pick and winner.

You picked Gavrilova and stood by your pick inspite of the whole world going with Aga. This shows great confidence and conviction in your picks especially of late and from R2 where you caught fire. You must be watching these players with a microscope probably!lol

I bet +3 on Gavrilova expecting Aga to win a close match(by -1 or -2) but Gavri to still cover. But Gavri proved too strong for Aga who is still not at her peak.

Tomorrow, I expect a close match of 2 players who are kinda mirror of each other with Cibulkova to win the New Haven Open in a tight 2-setter or a 3-setter. Cibulkova’s experience, aggression and consistency will be the difference maker.

Congrats wtaaddict again! You are becoming into a Tennis Prophet or Seer! Wondering how many Australian Dollars you bet on your picks?lol

    • Thank you Jaya 🙂

Cibulkova was an easy pick.. and yes I did have strong feeling it would be a good match-up for Gavrilova (and it was)

I expect Cibulkova to be too tough for Gavrilova, They have similar strengths but Cibulkova does everything a bit better
