Australian Open R2: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska vs Eugenie Bouchard
A blockbuster second round match-up at Melbourne Park on Wednesday sees two former semi-finalists in Melbourne go head-to-head. This is an extremely important clash for both Aga and Genie, a second round exit in the first Grand Slam of the year would be a very disappointing result for both, particularly Radwanska who seems well positioned to contend for a maiden Grand Slam title in 2016.
Radwanska and Bouchard both head into this match full of confidence having won a lot of matches in the lead up to Australian Open. Radwanska started the year in perfect fashion by claiming the title in Shenzhen whilst Bouchard reached the quarter-finals in Shenzhen and the final in Hobart. Radwanska and Bouchard both cruised through their opening round matches at Melbourne Park on Monday.
Radwanska produced a typically clean performance to breeze past Christina McHale 6-2 6-3, whilst Bouchard was too classy for Aleksandra Krunic, prevailing 6-3 6-4 in just over an hour.
The only previous meeting between the pair at the tour level took place in Madrid in 2014, Radwanska won that match 7-6 6-2. The pair also met at the Hopman Cup earlier in that year, Radwanska won that match in three sets.
I think this is a good match-up for Radwanska. Bouchard doesn’t really have the weapons to consistently trouble Radwanska, this is actually a match-up where Radwanska is able to dictate play and is very capable of exposing the numerous weaknesses in Bouchard’s game at the moment. Radwanska is far more consistent and has far more variety. I suspect Radwanska will win this match relatively comfortably.
